I would like some advice (no not to ditch it or scrap it or to tell me they are a piece of shit!) When u are driving along at 100km what should the RPM be! Thanks

What gear are you in!

mugenb20b, Oct 25, 7:14pm
Yes.your transmission will be stuffed.

we have just had repairs done on it coz it is fine around town but when u get on the motorway and get up to 100 it revs at about 3500. The mechanic replaced solonoids and then the dealership here reset computer AND BLEW IT UP! so ad to put in a used replacement and they managed to reset it but car still doing the same (there goes 1600$$ so far) nIt is an automatic.Any ideas on how much it would cost to do the transmission ! Im going back to rididng a horse but my luck it would drop dead on the way to work. We have only had the car for 6 weeks and 2 of that its been in the garage. Such a nice car too

Sorry to say that to ditch it is the best advice to give and they are a peice of crap. Cut your losses and buy something else. Its better than throwing more money at it. I know that it is is not the advice you want, but it is the best advice.

My parent bought one new and the trans blew at less than 5000km. The dealer had to send the trans to Aussie for repair as there wasn't anyone certed at the time in NZ. It was off the road for 10 weeks but they had the use of Merc during this time. When the Scenic was back on the road they told the dealer to keep and swapped for the loan car.

As above, it's pos, sell it, cut your losses.

Buy a 2.4 litre Toyota Ipsum, preferably with a service history AND get your local garage to check it out before handing over any money. Good luck.

Well if the dealership "blew it up" they pay to fix it simple as that.I wouldn't accept a 2nd hand trans that quite honestly will be no better than what came out.i see you are in Tauranga. Is there still anyone at Jacobsens that has Renault knowledge!Afterall they were Renault dealers for like a million years.Driveline Automotive in Rotorua often have Renaults in their shop.Give Myles a call 07 3503030

gammelvind, Oct 26, 7:02pm
My parents bought one from Jacobsens Tauranga, when it came up for a 60,000km service the mechanic there told them to get rid of it as soon as, because it will soon come to having a cambelt done, apparently a very expensive job plus the chances of the trans lasting past 80,000 km were close to zero. They sold it and bought a Corolla.

Thats the sort of service and advice you used to get from Jacobsens.I dealt with them often for Renault parts and service info in the 80s & 90s and always got good and helpful advice.

Something to do with it being a family run business maybe!

I have to agree here, Take it to Myles at Driveline Automotive in Rotorua. Straight up guy. He will put you right. Sam

its a huge problem with renault in this country I hope somone takes the renault dealership off these main agents ripoff artistst as they are destroying the renault brand in new zealand. I own a traffic renault called for a tireod inne r-rack-endwas told by renault auckland yes that van was our parts delivery car its the only one we ever imported and i would need to pay 240$ for 1 rackend ex europe. I said thank you i let you know . and went online and ordered it for 40 euro online plus shipping my self thats 80$ plus fraight . Now if that is not a ripoff i would undertstand it up to 160$ but 240 and then shipping from auckland to whangarei on and who knows probably plus gst also on top. They need to be removed as agent.

thats prob standard rpms in the 4 speed auto,is it 1.6 or 2.0. they are high revving cars and quite torquey from up there, all over about 140k, buy an aftermarket warranty i would advise,

lolzor123, Oct 31, 1:57pm
^ Could be the case - still a bit high tho for a 1.6! My 5-speed manual mazda with a 1.5petrol engine sits just over 3000rpm @ 100km in 5th and about 4000rpm in 4th.and nearing 5000rpm in 3rd ;)

fiatracer, Oct 31, 1:59pm
the Scenic is quite high geared. At least the 2 litres I have driven.

supernova2, Nov 2, 9:07am
OP have you had any luck with this yet.I've just been pricing some Renault parts and the Renault NZ prices are absolutely far too expensive. That i fear is going to be the downfall of getting yours repaired.Unless there is an aftermarket part available you really are stuck down a very very deep hole.

escapees, Nov 9, 2:28pm
Turns out transmission is stuffed. After working on it and a bill for 1200 we have decided to get rid of. Its a pity coz they are such a nice, safe vechile and had everything we wanted. the mechanic was saying there are alot of them sitting at the wreckers with exactly the same problem. Ebbetts is the dealer here in TGA now.I would think that anyone who has a 1998 renic scenic needs to have a spare one out the back to cannabilise as needed. Hope fully someone might want it for that reason coz i would rather that than take it to the wreckers.

supernova2, Nov 10, 8:10am
I agree such a pity. One part I need was $800 from Renault in NZ, $400 from Renault in Australiaand $150 ex UK to my door.Absolutely crazy.

I know there are lots of Scenics with stuffed autos but I do wonder why.Are they truely a POS or is it something to do with servicing or lack of servicing!

Guess we will never find out in NZ.

Good luck with selling the remains of yours.
