Yet another " Professional Driver ", whacks the Penrose Bridge with a high load of glass.
One wonders, if Insurance Companieswill pay for damage ,when the law has been broken !.

toyboy3, Oct 26, 3:15pm
That would be a pane !

snork28, Oct 26, 3:27pm
not aProfessional Driver at all, more like a muppet.

philltauranga, Oct 26, 6:01pm
I wonder if the glass didnt set off the over height sign! Its a lazer type beam accross the road similar to the driveway or alarm system beams, and if you break the lazer type beam a sign with strobe lights goes off, you cant miss it! Maby the glass dosent trip the beam as it would see straight through it!

xs1100, Oct 26, 6:03pm
nust admit "professional" you would have to ask yrself how long has that height restriction been in place, pretty much sinv=ce that kid died in the /decker bus so probably 10 yrs now and next Q how much would the fine alone be for that and 2nd Q is now he s fired from this job what does he declare to his next driving employer when asked why he left

splinter67, Oct 26, 6:08pm
actually was there in the early nineties I think they where there in the eighties but cant remember its a long time ago

xs1100, Oct 26, 6:11pm
didnt think the signs came in until after the boy either

splinter67, Oct 26, 6:19pm
we used to set them off with a car transporter that was 91 pretty sure they where there before that

jonthefisho, Oct 26, 7:23pm
Professional driver my foot. To bloody lazy to look up
and think.
Geeze that seems high should I measure it.

bashfulbro, Oct 27, 7:28am
Yeah, that`spossible phil, but it doesn`t excuse the driver,in your job, you and I know ,that , with height, you must know your height, not guess it.

Another point, it`s onlymy opinion, but i thinkNZTA`s insistence on having height signs posted at every motorway bridge is plain stupid, and contributes to the problem.

ONE sign at EVERY on ramp, Do Not Enter if Height exceeds 4.25. would do.
Drivers ,unfamiliar with the area, and who don`t do over height loads regularly, may seesigns, when passingBombay, Drury, ,RamaramaKarakabridges etc, showing heights way above4.25 , and think it`s fine to travel there, up to those heights.next minute.Conifer Grove.Bang !

I`m not trying to defend drivers, but i think having a whole lot of different height signs, does create confusion.

We've got it easy here, spent some time driving HGV in the UK. The truckers atlas over there has over 1600 low bridges marked on main and secondary roads. There are huge fines for hitting bridges plus the costs of engineers reports afterwards. With the warning signs, police motorway cams and gps technology this shouldn't be happening in a developed country at all as its not just the driver who could have prevented it.

snork28, Oct 27, 12:34pm
http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/53/general-operating-requirements.htmlclearly states that no loads over 4.25 will traverse sthn m/way apart from ramarama interchange sth. there is nothing wrong with not beingsure and needing a little help all you have to do is ask someone, and those containers have the glass in big wooden cases which would set the m/way lights off, assuming the system was working.

truckr, Oct 31, 6:43pm
the lazers are set off by anything breaking the beam, overheight loads up to 5 metres can be carried on certain roads without a permit over 5 metres requires a permit but everything on the motorway must be 4.25 even with a permit everything else should be using the functional but very painful heavy haulage route

xpfairmont, Oct 31, 9:21pm
I think if it's your job is to drive every day. Fines should be double! No ifs or buts about it!

rsr72, Nov 1, 6:54am
Sheer laziness in never having demolished the bridge and built a new one.
It has been a problem from the day it was built.

trogedon, Nov 1, 7:15am
No, its just like other road rules.

bashfulbro, Nov 1, 7:25am
Why !, if drivers adhered to a very, very simple law it would never be an issue.

rsr72, Nov 1, 7:29am
It's lower than other bridges, and has been from the day it was built.

rsr72, Nov 1, 7:29am
It's lower than other bridges.
Safe clearance should be measured in metres rather than centimetres.

trade4us2, Nov 1, 8:02am
They don't have to demolish the bridge, just lower the motorway!
How about the Aussie warning system - a load of oil drums hanging across the road at the height of the bridge!

rsr72, Nov 1, 9:27am
#19- They tried that; it didn't work.
Any more and they'd need pumps.

snork28, Nov 1, 3:44pm
the posted height on that bridge sth/bound is 4.41m, thats only 160ml clearance for trucks operating at 4.25m which is not a lot ,as long as they have such low tolerances trucks will keep hitting that bridge, again @ again; generally by green drivers that get caught out. we know the law and they have all sorts of warning systems but it would probably be cheaper in the long run to lift the bridge before it kills somebody.

aragorn2003, Nov 1, 3:55pm
Man thats not alot of water!

bashfulbro, Nov 6, 5:04am

robbo36, Nov 6, 8:55am
I like the way the warning lights are flashing and they still drive on through.lol.
Amazing how they keep going after some of the damage done to the truck box bodies. etc.
