Can anyone name some production spec cars that would have 0-100kph times around the 5 second mark! A little above or below is fine.

Absolutely rediculous suggestions, everyone knows only supercharged commodores can do 0-100 in 5 seconds

Ha.I wish. NZ is soon to introduce a learner approved motorcycle scheme the same they have in Aussie. The crux of it is that novice riders are limited to bikes that are 150kW per tonne (or less) rather than the current 250cc limit. On the face of it that makes sense, after all power to weight is a far better measure of performance than cc rating. However that power in a bike gives around a 5 sec 0-100 time (very approx, could be as low as about 4.1 if some manufacturers claims are to be believed) so I was just curious as to what cars that would equate to.
So what we're saying is that because you're a novice rider, you are 'limited' to something equivalent of an Audi S4 V8.on two wheels.
Gotta love politicians.

200hp/tonne is heaps for a learner!

Ah, that was 5 seconds, not 5 minutes!

Bikes are in a whole other world as far as performance goes.
Look at a Honda CBR-250, 33kw and 157KG which works out over 200kw/tonne

Not sure what you mean.

I'm a little undecided at the moment myself. I THINK I like limiting the options for novices (riders or drivers), however if that's taken too far it's giving the impression that parents/guardians don't have the responsibility to manage the situation themselves (crap, we're heading for parenting again.) .
However, drawing the line at 150kW doesn't seem to stack up with genuinely trying to do something about it IMHO. It's a WAY higher benchmark than 250cc was, back when that was set.

My point is there are 250s about with well in excess of that power to weight

Ya absolutely. Going by the Aussie model they draw a line at 250cc, but also ban anything over the 150kW/tonne mark, and exempt anything up to 660cc that is under the 150kW/tonne.
Lotus Super Seven, 4.08 seconds. Assembled in Christchurch. This was back in 1977.
