Just wondering if those bottles of fuel injector cleaner are effective or are we buying snake oil! This is for a petrol engined car.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Depends on the general state of your engine etc.

Toyota 3S-FSE D4 engine, 110,000 km. Just done belt, water pump and plugs. Thought a dose might help the injectors, more as maintenance than a problem.

Good idea imo

Deposits can cling to the fuel system and something to wash that away can help, on the flipside it can dislodge buildup into the injectors which is a backwards step and could make it run like ass. My old 4agze used to love a clean system, I ran injector and full fuel system cleaner a few times through and it helped it out.

Not sure about the direct injection motor though, to be honest i've never dealt with them. Just make sure the cleaner is O2 safe, Pretty sure the FSE uses a wideband because it might have ultra lean burn capabilities.

Well their snake oil in the sence that, for what they are, their expensive.
They generally dont list their ingrediants. But i suspect they would be mostly tolurene or zylene. which can be baught cheeply as paint thinners.
Meny aftermarket race fuels are based on these chemicals. The turbo formula 1 cars of the early 80s supposedly used 100% tolurene.
Also great for washing parts and causing cancer
