What would you do?

I have a 1998 cefiro which has done 260ks. It needs a starter motor plus a new fan on the radiator which will cost around $400. The alternator is reading 13 something which the mechanic says needs replacing. If you bought a newer car you would have to do it on finance. Is it worth fixing the cefiro or better to buy a newer car around $10k! Thanks

Depends if cefiro is running mint apart from that. I would rather fix cefiro up unless you want the new car. I know what this message board will say and its going to be fix up.

Get a second opinion from an auto electrician about the electrical bits, check for other fan prices, find out what the car will sell for as is, what it is worth fixed, look at the cost of replacement cars, then toss a coin.

Assess the rest of the car is the windscreen in good cond, tyres!, exhaust, shocks, if these have been changed or a still good spend the $400, the car payments on a $10k loan will be about $350 per month.

These cars go for ever. Don't buy new parts. check wreckers on here or local pick a part. My 03 Maxima has 320Kays on it and still goes strong. Do a search of previous threads, they all say the same. I've recently swapped a rebuilt starter motor and a radiator fan on mine too funnily enough.

Check my listings!

Whats wrong with the alternator! You know that a set of brushes costs no more than $20.Give yourself an hour to fit them assuming that you can use a spanner and perhaps a soldering iron. What exactly are you getting for $400!Someone that hasn't pinpointed the problem and will just throw in a recon unit anyway!
