Stem valves or rings?

Am I correct in thinking that if my car had issues with the stem valves it would smoke upon start up but clear as you are driving and be fine while warmed up throughout the day!
But if it was the rings it would smoke continuously also while driving and especially upon acceleration and load and wouldn't clear up once car was warm!

valve stem smoke you usually see when on manual transmission you drive down a hill with no throttle and use the gear to slow it . and when you then use the throttle again to speed up blue smoke puff would come out the exhaust that is about a typical one for valve stem seals

Or. puff of blue on startup. oil seeps down past the seal, settles in the ports to be burned when you turn the key. what you originally said.

Lucky I have an automatic then eh,those autos must be easier on valve seals.

My 2005 maxima I went through, did all the valves, stem seals, headgasket, had things trued up and messed around with things. New waterpump, new this, new that.

Proudly put it back together, Puffs blue after the overrun, didn't do the guides cause they seemed good. But I'll be damned if I'm doing all 32 valves again for that.

That sounds exactly like valve stem seals to me, they are easy to replace without removing the head. You can lock the crank shaft and pressurize the cylinder with compressed air through the spark plug hole. remove the valve retainer and spring and replace the seal.

Easier idea is a short piece of rope, pushed into the cylinder through the plug hole. not all of it, keep the end out. Then bring the piston to TDC, pushing the rope onto the valve heads.

LOL.good idea.ifits a paddock car.

Approx how many hows of labour would this take!

budgel, Nov 3, 2:22pm
V8 is it!

xpfairmont, Nov 3, 9:24pm
On my old Falcon two hours, give or take. On a newer car you might spend an hour or so removing other parts just to get the rocker/valve cover off!
But a really simple job.
But at a work shop about a week or two. half a day to pull it apart, leave apart and start on something else, then order wrong parts X2.etc.etc

Ah ok was just wondering if the hours I was billed were about right! as I was billed 13 hours work, and as I am not a mechanic (clearly lol) I wasn't sure if that was right but have taken their word for it :)

Whoops, yeah ummmm welded 2 extra cylinders on the other day. Goes good now

tgray, Nov 4, 2:14pm
You can get an awful lot done in 13 hours!

Dave653's idea of nylon rope in the cylinder is a good alliterative to com[pressed air, it does work really well.

OHC engines can smoke continuously if their valve guides are worn.showing the same symptoms as worn rings.
To see if it's worn rings or not, also check the motor breather hose for fumes and excessive pressure, which is caused by 'blow by' past the rings.
