Whe you have been in the panel and paint industry for a while you see all manner of things under filler. Ive (as you all have) seen,Stitch welds (inch weld inch gap) Full continuous welds, a million spot welds, The patch under the hole, the patch over the hole(that never lasts) and nicly cut out and butt matched patches. Welds that arn't doing anything, welds that would hold a bridge together. And of course pop rivited and screwed patches. So how do you guys weld a 4"X4"patch on say an HQ lower rear gaurd and excpect to stay there and not show after a few years, or even a half skin for that matter.

you need to be able to seal the patch from inside and you need to cut out all the rust patch on top spot weld so it dont distorts and then seem weld beween spots grind down weld . Seal inside paint inside and paint outside and boog and finish rest like primer paint.

scrunched up newspaper and a tin of bog, finish with a surform
been known to spot braize before though, but not on flat panel, more for sills and gutter rail areas ( in the days before mig welders) I do still remember how to apply white metal ( and a heavily scorchedpine block) used to use remelted white metal bearings from old conrods

Depends on what's being paid and which part of the car, I will stick a patch over a hole in a boot floor and stitch weld it before sealing both sides. In most other places I butt weld a fitted patch.

I found under sealed duck tape over news paper stuffed in a rust hole in the back of a sill of a car I was WOF inspecting once. 'You'll have to do better than that' I told the guy. 'That wasn't me' He said indignantly 'Well it's yesterdays paper' I replied.

Use that expanding polyurethene foam, it sticks to anything, shave off the excess and bog and paint, job done.

Interesting replies, seems theres only a couple of guys who do this kinda thing. Thought there would have been a few views on how it should (or should'nt) be done correctly.or as suggested by cost.

I prefer to make a patch that fits nicely and butt mig it in, after folding/hammering/trimming etc. Just doing some on a '85 LandCruiser at the moment. I hate Jap steel!

cut the rust out, make a cardboard pattern, cut the patch out, doesnt matter if its slightly over size ,place on panel. mark outer edge of patch cut car again, butt weld, patch in place, belt sand, hammer& file, prime, paint both sides, no problems,,
