New 1/2" Rattle/Impact Gun

unbeatabull, Nov 4, 9:44am
My old Bluepoint rattle gun is getting a bit tired, looking to upgrade to a new one. Cause all of the salesman you talk to all reckon theirs is the latest and greatest, thought I'd ask others who have actually got experience with them! (Seeing most salesman don't carry a demo one with them and look at me funny if I ask to try first!)

Looking for something grunty. Highest spec ones I've found are the Snap On one, Ingersoll Rand and Sumake (All around 900-1000ft/lb) SP Tools have one around 790ft/lb but that's probably a little low for me. I managed to get a hold of a Ingersoll Rand one and wasn't overly impressed with it. The Sumake one seems ridiculously heavy. Whereas the Snap on one has a stupid speed adjuster and is about an extra $500. Any other brands I'm missing out on! Jonnesway have a pretty good one to but no replaceable parts available so once it craps out that's it.

Ingersol rand, I've had mine 5 years use it everyday in the Aussie outback and hasn't given any trouble. My one is the quiet one rated to 900ft lb breaking force from memory. Rebuild kits for them are cheap out of the states too.

You could try a 3/4'' IR pneumatic impact wrench.

or
if that is not enough a 1'' Campbell Haufeld1500 ft/lbs.
a
CH 1/2 '' is only 450 ft/lbs.
a Shinano 1/2 '' is 280ft/lbs

I have a Ingersoll Rand gun in the workshop, I must admit I rarely use it as I prefer to use my Snapon battery gun all day every day. but when it wont undo something out comes the air gun a few drops of air tool oil and off it comes every time with a bit of rattling!

i had my bluepoint sent away and refurbished 5 years ago, cost about $300 and came back in new condition new covers and all.Its still the best rattle gun in the workshop

hard to say, but i second the suggestion to refurbishing what you have, most can be rebuilt. unless it is well and truely knackered. Sumake you mention is from SULCO! composite! Yep, i used to sell them. great gun for the first year - but SP would be a good way to go - rather consistant in performance - but is it worth the extra for an ingersoll rand!

The Ingersoll Rand is cheaper then the SP Tools one.

Reason I ask, is crank pulleys on the new Mondeo's and Focus's are damn tight. Even an off the shelf bluepoint one doesn't budge them anymore! Such a hassle having to remove the starter and lock the flywheel every time so would prefer to get something a bit gruntier!

My Bluepoint one I think is only rated around 480ft/lb new. Snap On one is around 1100ft/lb I believe.

I have the latest Snap On one, wouldnt buy it again - my old Blue Point lasted well (still going strong actually) Ive tried the SP one which seemed to have a tonne more grunt but never put it near a stuck on Accord pulley bolt (the worst - always use Honda tool & strong arm bar lol) . All depends on the air you have in the workshop ( I think you work at Ford) so it would be grunty enough obviously. The torque / speed changing on the Snap On one is horrible to use btw.

unbeatabull, Nov 4, 3:07pm
That is the reason why I haven't got the Snap On one, cause of the speed change switch. I've asked if I can modify it and still be covered under warranty which was a no which I pretty much said well ya lost a sale then!

Yes, correct with where I work :P Our Air supply is pretty good.

Tony or Paul your dealer! Tony is a good bugger

I've got Paul. He normally budges quite a bit for a cash in the hand sale :D

i use a sumake 1/2 inch and snap on 1/2 inch IM6100 for most things, my blue point AT770 3/4deals to honda crank bolts but also i run 3/8 fittings instead of 1/4, the sumake was rated 900 nm in reverse so i took it to wayco and bench tested it,actually only makes 400-500 nm so makes you wonder about the rates advertised will products

you hit the nail on the head with the sumake. i saw a similar test, yet the SP did very good. and was a product i pushed when i could, with no dissapointed buyers.
