Testing 2 stroke crankcase seals

mrsdoobercoons, Nov 4, 1:26pm
I've got a Husqvarna 40 that looks like it's got a leaky case, it's "running away" from idle, and won't even run unless the mixture is wound out several turns.

I see in a manual I've downloadeda factory tool for testing the crankcase, but I can guess the result if I take my saw into a workshop to get tested.

I've got another one that I can rob for bits, but would like to isolate the problem before I start swapping parts around.

Has anyone got any bright ideas for testing to see where the leak is!

Cheers, Graeme.

Given that there will be a petroil mix under pressure in there, isnt there a visible oily mist!

I wonder if it would be possible to make an adaptor to go where the carb fits and attach a compressed air line ans fill when the piston is at TDC.

Are you sure it isnt an inlet gasket leak!

I've tried looking around the seal with it running but can't see much, too much in the way, and if I take that off, it won't run. (carb muffler coil etc). Also had the carb off and back on about 10 times trying to sort it.

One other possibility is the little seal on the impulse channel between the carb adapter and the barrel. That looks like it could leak in, but not out, which could be tricky

most of that model saw 40 and 45 sucked air between the carb mounting manifold block and cylinder they have 2 pieces of rubber 1 for fuel 1 for crankcase pulse for pumping fuel they are a crap saw most blew up from running too lean.

Normally a 2 stroke won't have any compression and won't run if the crankcase seals are leaking, as they need to hold the pressurised mixture under the piston, before it's transferred above to be fired by the spark plug.
Sounds like a fuel or air leak problem.

take the clutch off,run the saw and squirt some soapy water on it,if it blows bubbles you have issues.flywheel side squirt crc down the side while its running if the engine pitch changes= more issues, take the carb off and check the small rubber piece in the cylinder head, may need replacing, dont run it the way it is as it wont last.carb settings 1 1/4 turns out, adjust out-never in.any other issues contact me,regards russell
