Mate took his son;s XF Falcon for a WOF yesturday; the mechanic was going to turn it down for a worn air con belt. When questioned on it; he let it go through.
P.S.; belt now replaced.

Not aslo Power Steering belt is it!
There was a Renault on here a while ago where the alt belt had broken and somehow managed to get tangled in the cam belt which didnt do anything any good at all.

Maybe there might be merit in failing a belt if it possible that belt could cause a saftey issue.

Is this part of the move to Aussie style annual inspections ensuring the forced ventilation system works!

If the air con belt breaks, then catches the power steer belt, ripping that off and depriving you of power steering - is that not a safety issue!

Yes, but the mechanic could've just noted a/c belt problem in the comments section to cover his arse.

Of course, you could try and fail a wof on an overdue cambelt.because if it breaks, you lose p/s and brake assist.

Nope. visual inspection only

There's a bit in the VIRM that states an inspector can fail anything he believes is a safety issue.

If,; leaves it wide open. If you you have a new WOF; leave the garage and blow a front tyre and hit a pole. Same senario.
Anyway I was only commenting how through some are.
