DRL wof issue

carib2, Nov 10, 5:23pm
I have installed new projector headlites in my vz commy that have led drl in them that stay on when headlites are on, high/low beam, ive now been told it will fail its next wof as the drl must turn off when headlites are on! the drls replace the park lites. Is this the case! Ive checked the LSTA website and it says they SHOULD turn off not MUST turn off, ive also noted that audi ones dont. Any thoughts!

Reason for rejection from the Virm.
11. A daytime running lamp continues to operate when the headlamps or fog lamps are switched on.

Rules are rules, but is there a valid reason for that one!
Should be easy enough to fix for the OP, wire a double pole relay to the driving lights so they turn off when there's 12V going to the headlights, with diodes in the relay solenoid power circuit for low/high beam.

NZ is so behind the times in safety, lights dont distract oncoming drivers, they increase awareness

That dosnt make sense. Many vehicles are not made with DRL. Yet the ones of seen switch off when you turn the headlights on. So really our rule is based on the fact that manufactures already create vehicles that way. NZTA arnt going to make a rule that goes against all car manufactures in the world.

no thats not the case, audi drls stay on when headlights are on, in certain euro countries and canada new laws are they must be on at all times if vehicle is fitted with them, just seems crazy that some gomer here has decided that he/she knows better

DAYLIGHT running lights are designed to increase the visibility of vehicles during daylight. To do this they have a beam that shines up into the eyes of oncoming drivers. This is good during the day, but at night it will dazzle oncoming drivers.
This is why daylight running lights should/must not operate with the headlights.

Can be easily done without diodes using a relay. Use power from headlight to operate the relay so as to cut power off going to the daytime lights.

No, DRLs dim to park light output when headlamps are on, not the bright day time output

My drl dim when my lights turn on they have passed a wof

If the OP wants the driving lights to go off when the headlamps are on either high or low beam, he'll need diodes in series with a tap taken fromthe separate switched +12v from the high beam and low beam circuits. The diodes only need amp rating higher than the relay coil, 1A is probably plenty - a couple of 1N4001 diodes from Jaycar should do the trick, probably get the relay and diodes for under $10.

i run the Helle LED daytime running light strips on the front of my truck. i must say, very very bright to oncoming traffic. and amazing how much of an area they light up in the dark. There too are wired to turn off when the lights are turned on, as per COF rules. after seeing many that dont, yes, very blinding to oncoming drivers. However, very effective during the daytime.
Teh Holden and Audi ones i have seen on cars, i havent notices what is on, or off at the time, but certainly dont appears as intense as the hella ones.

I fitted daytime lights to my Maxima and just used a relay without diodes to turn off the daytime lights when headlights were turned on. Power from an ignition sourcevia relay to the daytime lights.wire from headlights power source to relay switch and earthed the other side of the relay. When power is fed to headlightsit closes the relay and cuts off the power from the ignition to the daytime lights.

Got a diagram of how to hook up the relay. Just having trouble getting mental image but once I see a diagram it becomes clear to me. Cheers.
