Anyone know how to set up a spray gun?

kiwibookhunter, Nov 14, 6:38am
Hi have here an older style spray gun (not one of those flash HVLP ones that has the cup on top) and need to set it up to paint with a compressor, I have done one round of primer already and it is fine for that but definitely needs to be spraying better for top coat.any advise gratefully accepted.

There is not enough space here to explain it all and if i did EVERY car painter here will have a different opinion. For instance, the way i set up my guns would probably make gunhand and robman cringe, but it has worked for me for 30 years. Likewise if i saw either of them paint i'd probably say WTF to their gun set up. My advise is you tube will give you some good ideas and then you can fine tune it from there. Just type in 'spray gun set up', i just did and there's plenty to get you started.

ya thx have been on utube but they all apply to hvlp guns.

approximate air pressure would be a great start as I am totally guessing.Have it at about 50 psi atm

I'm afraid Google & you tube are going to be the only real answer to your questions mate. There are so many variables to consider and EVERYONE will paint differently.

Pressure - paint reduction - fan size - material feed - distance to panel - compressor size (FAD). These are just some of the issues.

It's no good me telling you 50 PSI is ok because if you hold the gun 4" from the panel it won't be good, but 50PSI at 10" may be fine.

Also how long is the hose you're using and what ID is it! Most hoses lose 10PSI per 3 metre of length. Have you got a pressure gauge on the gun!

As i said, too much to consider.

Sorry.

okay no gauge on the gun, it is only on the tank.

the hose is extremely short - a metre and a half of thin spring hose.

there are just two adjustment screws on the gun, one at the back of the handle that looks like it makes the trigger not go so far back so is the fluid flow, this i take it should be open so the trigger goes right back.the other is up near the nozzle.

I personally wouldn't use that gun or hose, they're crap. Also you will never know what the pressure is at the gun, the guage on the tank is only telling you the pressure IN the tank.

My suggestion is go to super cheap, buy a cheap ass gravity feed gun (pot on top) and a air hose, it may end up costing $100 all up but beleive me, even the crap from super cheap will be better than using what you have. You need a gun with 3 adjustments, bottom of handle = pressure, small one very top = fan size and the one below top one is material feed.

IF you insist on using what you have mate you WILL be disappointed with the outcome.

awesome, thank you that is brilliant advise, i was starting to think like that anyway.have a good long hose here already that has the standard big clip on fitting.will spray another round of primer with this gun cause it has no problem with that and then go get a decent gun, one that has set up instructions on the tube :D

This is what ya want mate, cheap enough and you can adjust it 'til ya hearts content.

Not a HVLP but will certainly do the job for ya.

Be sure to get the correct fittings tho', nothing worse than getting home to find ya got the wrong ones LOL.

great yep that was the one i was going to ask you if it was the one i wanted! thanks for your help.back to sanding. have a good day.

Everything thats been said above, toss the stuff you have away. Those guns will do a very good job. Ive used many a gun and for me its all the actual ability of the painter. And a metre and a half of hose!.
And you got me worried now attitude LOL.
As for set up, well I use 30psi at gun and full fan and about half fluid delivery. I found once I had it the way I liked it I never change the setting, apart from fan width at times. Pressue I adjust at water trap if need be.

Yeah i think that is the important thing here.
Why not have a play with a piece of cardboard kiwibookhunter.
After all the *feel* of the gun is as important as the settings re distance, speed of travel etc.
And be aware with a gun instead of spray cans ventilation can be a biggie

attitudedesignz, Nov 14, 4:49pm
Haha, why!

gunhand, Nov 14, 4:51pm
It was the word "gringe" that worried me LOL.

attitudedesignz, Nov 14, 4:56pm
Yeah well i have been known to have 3 inch fan, 4 inch distance, 40psi and full material feed.just gotta move f'n fast haha.
