why do people advertise this like its a good thing! every nz new car seems to be the most base model possible and clapped out from being on our roads for its entire life lol. anything im missing!

At least the radio and satnav are in English, and no country has yet ditched the car for being too old.

also on nz newyou can get a carjam or other report of the recorded wofs and check for odometer tempering. anything imported has likely got 100.000km wound back befor it got her and no way to proof unless you got original service documents. like i do for my uk imported vw diesel
shinra,

didnt realise winding back the odo at the border was common practice

Depends on where the import has come from if its from salted roads like theuk and ihas more than average corrosion underneath id prefer a NZ new one for sure.
But most of our imports come from japan and in general they are pretty good as far as condition goes. But its still nice to know as some instances like the difference between a pulsar GTI and a sentra SSS anybody with half a brain will take the NZ new sentra provided its not clapped out.
intrade,

you be surprised what they do. you can assume that every import has been temperd with and them certification stickers about true odometer reading are about as usefull as mc donalds vip stickers. only proof is service records from day 1 the car was sold .

vwhave got a 12 year factory no rust warranty so my 2001 bora is just about to run out of that next year and no i dont tell you to go and buy a vw now , i just tell you the facts.

And of course NZ new means a well serviced and maintained car. And of course if damaged repaired to the highest standerd in the best body shops, not in the back yard with bog a trowell and a spray can. And NZ owners are as honest as the day is long of course. NZ owners do not smoke drink or have sex in there cars either so they are very clean. And they have never towed a 50 foot boot with a there 1.8 corolla. We have smooth flat roads so hill starts are no problem so the clutch will be fine. And all are kept in air conned garages as well. Yep, best car on the planet then NZ new ones. And lastly no one EVER speeds in them.

For the 90's I dont really think there is much difference but when you get into the new stuff where things like heater controls, sat nav, music system etc is all encorporated into a single unit, when its in japanese sometimes you are just stuck with it (especially when the heater controls are in there), in that case I would much rather have a NZ new model even if it meant stepping down a spec level.
shinra,

ah okay it was generally the 90s i was talking about. just all these second hand cars and sometimes i see nz new in bold in the auction title and im lookin at it sideways lol.

NZ new is what people are happy to pay more money for hence they are advertised that way. Imports come with more risk and pitfalls.
I would take NZ new any day over a Vitz or a Syphly or a BB or a Caldina or a Regius or any of those wierd and wonderfuls.

NZ new on lots of jap cars also meant the car had NZ calibrated suspension with spring and shock ratings specced for NZ conditions rather than the mushy driving JDM cars with their US style soft suspensions
kazbanz,

ROTFLMAO Vitz =NZ name Echo Silphy = Nz Name Pulsar Purely a matter of the badge put on the back of the car.
amberjandal,

Not my point Kabanz - which would you rather own and more importantly which is WORTH more !

UTTERrubbish.Part of the inspection carried out is a check on the computerised service history of the vehicle.

kazebanz is that why a clients terrano spat the automatictrans at its certified 144000 milages sticker on the windscreen at 160,000kmits more like it was wound back or so and then the tired reans soon pooped it self with worn bands. Slipping up the hill when it was in for a reseal on leaking fuelinjector pump.

Much higher chance that any diesel that's either NZ new or an import that's been in NZ for a while has a "clocked" speedo. The biggest problems with clocked imports wasn't happening "at source", but after import to NZ, by some very dodgy dealers.Dodgy doesn't mean small back-yard types either. One very large "prestige" dealer in Chch was done for routinely clocking import BMWs, Mercs, etc.

Being NZ New isn't a panacea for all car problems, but it is an indication it will be slightly less risk. The history and documentation is more likely to correct and traceable, less likely to have been driven by a smoker, it will be fitted with the equipment and trim level exactly the same as the cars sold here (imported cars tend to be under or over specified compared to NZ new) and the engine size and suspension setup will be what was specified for NZ roads. Less likely to have aftermarket additions or funny wheels (yes there are some buyers who like these add-ons, but there are more buyers who would rather not have them). All in all not an enormous difference, because most imports are pretty thoroughly vetted these days, but enough to command a small premium when comparing cars of equal condition.
And my pet hate on imports! - those ugly plastic monsoon shield thingies which not only spoil the look of the car, they are very hard to remove and they shout out that this car must have been driven by a smoker.

NZ New always worth more.
You know its history.
NZ New cars have better features quite often.
I'd always go for the NZ New car over the Jap poc 'equivalent'.
mm12345,
Nov 30, 8:18am
And often not - except if "less=more".
One thing not mentioned is that NZ new jappers these days might be made in spain, thailand, or goodness knows where else, but the equivalent japanese import was probably made in Japan. I know what I'd rather have - and so do Japanese motorists.
bellky,
Nov 30, 8:24am
Less = more, if it means less safety warning buzzers and dingers and locks outs and etc. I can't do anything on a jap impo without it screeching at me :)
freedomaira320,
Nov 30, 8:29am
I don't find that very compelling. If a Japanese manufacturer has some of its models made in other factories, they can end up in the domestic Japanese market as well. And Jap import Euros are made in exactly the same places as they are for every market - all sorts of countries but none are made in Japan.
