98 Subaru forester When he applies the brake the car swerves to the right, then when he releases it makes a clunking noise

Brake pad worn right down, does it make a grinding noise when he puts the brakes on. Whatever it is I wouldn't drive it till it's fixed.

some suspension bushes or joints worn or broken.get it checked out soonest before you have a accident.
