Hey guy's, so, i'm thinking of buying an RX8 type S with 100 thou k's on it, only thing is I don't really know much about them and have heard that even in the service manual it's reccomended to rebuild them every 50 thou. So my question is, how reliable are they! Am I likely to have to get it rebuilt! And what are some common problems with them! Thanks for you help (:

Looking to spend about 10-20k, i've found a really nice one on here for 14k, it's got to be the best looking one i've seen haha

The early ones have a few problems, coils and don't use the Mazda oil (10w30 synthetic), and some other stuff I can't remember.
Some rx8s have gone way over 200,000kms without rebuild.
Best to research sites like: rx7.com rx8.com ausrotary.com

good luck with finding some information! Might struggle on here, there are a few longstanding arguments which will spoil any sensible conversation.

I've heard and read mixed reports on reliability of the RX8. Some have had to deal with major rebuilds at well under 100.000km whilst others have continued to have a trouble free run for near on double that figure. A fair assumption would be that the difference is dictated by prior maintenance and the manner in which they have been driven. Read into that what you will.
On a side note I think many people still make the mistake of looking at sports cars or other high end vehicles and assuming that the maintenance will be no more than any other Japanese car - and they would be so very wrong. If an RX8 is really your thing then try to find something with as much service history as you can or where work has been done look for receipts from shops that know their stuff.
Good luck.

Ive owned one and it was very nice , it was a 2004 type s turbo model. It went very well compared to non turbo. Be sure to use a good quality mineral oil, not synthetic. I'd stay away from anything rotary thats done 100000+. The early rx8's had a start up problems after a short trip.

LOL, for that price & spec vehicle, I would be wanting a heck of a lot more km's from it then 100,000 to 200,000kms before a major rebuild. Stuff that.
Seen a couple of those around Hamilton & they are already blowing blue exhaust smoke with commuter traffic speeds.
Nice body design but would LOVE to drop a 3L Mitsi v6 in there

Not supposed to put an old donk into a newish car.kind of like dropping a model A Ford engine into a Toyota Yaris.

Mate has the early modellow spec 8, best thing he did was upgrade the coils and gruntier starter motor (apparently Mazda upgraded starter for later model 8's)
I have had the pleasure of a weekend piloting a late model S 6 speed with 180k on the clock still pulling as strong as day one.

Well they are 2-strokes (I mean they burn oil in conbustion by design).

LOL why not, a lot of older engines are a lot stronger & easier /cheaper to purchase & fix then a lot of newer engines.

Are you allowed to use rotory and reliability in the same sentencethe 2 dont go together

Rotarys Inject oil from the sump into the combustion chamber to lube the rotors so it is normal to smoke a little and have oil on the plugs that's why you are supposed to run mineral oil instead of synthetic. I work at a workshop that gets a few rotarys through and they all seem to get rebuilt around 100k its alot cheaper to rebuild one that is still running good than one that is damaged. Housings and rotors are expensive.

They never made a factory turbo RX8 though

yes thats right these engines need oil to not only lubricate parts, but to also create a seal between the rotors and the rotor housing.having small deposits of oil is ok but the amount i found is due to low compression

Correct , my one was an HKS show car imported from Singapore
