Cv joints. I have a click click click when i turn hard which i have been told is the cv joint so i am having that replaced today

Our old pulsar has a knackered CV, but that's only clicking in slightly off straight ahead position, more noticeable under slight acceleration.At low speed on full lock, it seems fine.It's getting worse - when I first noticed it, I pulled the axle to check, the CVs felt fine, double-checked bearings, had me scratching my head that perhaps it was something else.I'm wondering if it's actually the inner CV on it's way out rather than the outer, and to save myself some grief I might be better changing the complete axle.

Umm well yea, wouldn't have been much left of the joint & besides that, "most" sensible ppl would have had it fixed long ago

I was told it was a universal joint making the noise and nothing to worry about unless it makes noise while driving in a straight line, at the time i didnt think that CV joints gave much trouble, now that i do, i know what to look for next time!

LOL. oh dear, because you KNOW what the kicker is about what you were told .
That "universal joint" IS the CV on fwd vehicles.

I wouldn't think you would 'feel' the wear/damage just moving it in your hand. Even inspecting them it's not always clear. Testing in-situ is really the only way.

A horrible grinding noise and the car will be basicly undrivable but the really knackered one I had was on a 400.000 km diesel Corona that had not been maintained since it became a Kiwi car cant believe something with only 70k on it is too bad

No, universals and CV joints are completley different things, my car has both universals and CV joints.
I thought i was going to have to replace a maltese cross, but it was the CV that went.

ok I have my car back and a very empty bank acc, ouch. It was definitely outer CV joint, it is now not scary to drive lol

Maybe it is nowdays, but i expect they are there to give the driveshafts extra freedom of movement. They are not used for steering, rather for up and down movement when the car goes over bumps or uneven surface, just like a car with independent suspension.
