New mobile speed cameras - very low power K-band. In car microwave - Ka-band.

mine are far less effective at picking up camera vans than they used to be, but where they most certainly DO provide protection is in detecting police patrol cars. People often argue that by the time your detector alerts you, it's too late. What rubbish. I do a fair bit of open road driving and often am caught behind slower cars, and I am then in a position of waiting for a good passing opportunity. Because I believe in minimising TED rather than sticking to an abritrary speed limit while overtaking, this exposes me to being pinged. The radar detector alerts me to a police patrol in the area, quite likely among cars heading towards me [but in the distance], allowing me to make a more informed decision whether to overtake or not.

That's only really true if you're the only vehicles on the road at the time.

yes indeed, but even then you can pick up weak signals from way off in the distance - ie - when the patrol cars flicks on radar for other cars. this at least alerts you to a cop being around

Yep, a little reflection goes a long way to a sensitive detector.

Or he speed checks a vehicle ahead of you while still out of sight and gives you tons of warning. Ignore it at your own wallet's peril.
