Passengers must wear seatbelts

If you put seats in the back of your van they need to have seatbelts. Legally they should be certified unless they go in on the origonal mounts then it isok for a mechanic to do it. The best option is to buy a set of seats and belts out of a dismantled van.

Could someone point me to the LTSA or write up about the law! I have a few friends who swear they have been pulled over in a work van with a fold up bench seat in the back (fixed) with people in it, with no seat belts and the police have said it's okay . Just sounds like a law the police don't know all too well.

We recently had a latish model (2005) hiace van with a factory folding rear seat and no seatbelts in the rear.
All you need to know.If my memory is correct, (30 years of issuing WOF's), the question you ask revolves around weather there is more room for passengers or goods (freight) behind the drivers seat.

Surely from the safety point you would put seat belts in.

I have an 05 Hiace van. When I bought it ,it had 2 rows of seats in the back but no seat belts. I asked the dealer that I bought it from (Toyota Franchise) if it needed seatbelts for a WoF and they said no. I have had it for 5 or 6 years and have taken out the 2nd row of seats but left the 1st row in and folded out of the way. I have never failed a warrant on it. The seat hardly ever gets used.

Sounds like a law YOU don't know too well. All you've heard is some bs from a mate and now YOU are the one here asking. Asking is fine, I just find the police comment ironic.

My partners parents has the same model hiace as the person stevo2 with the fold down seats with no seat belts. They got pulled over with both myself and my partner in the rear for a random routine check. Didn't say anything about it, so was just wondering.

we have a work van that has a fold down seat no seat belts and have been pulled over 3 times not once has the police asked if the rear seat has seatbelts while there is people sitting on it. I once asked the WOF guy to see if it needed it and he replied if it "left the factory without them then no"
