I dunno but you have to use a calcium battery.

the-lada-dude, Dec 11, 10:55am
would an iron one do !

bitsy_boffin, Dec 11, 10:58am
A carbide lamp is a gas lamp, as in, flame. No voltages involved.

A Carbide lamp, which is what lada asked about, is a gas lamp.

Water + Calcium Carbide produces Acetylene, which you light, with a match.

What's the inside diameter of a VW bug top radiator hose! Would have been a bloody good thread but spoiled a bit now by somebody who "didn't get it"

splinter67, Dec 11, 12:45pm

purple666, Dec 11, 12:56pm

Hey I found this thread useful - years ago my Granddad used to tell us kids stories about when he was a lad etc etc and one of them was peeing into his bike lamp!It sounded to us like he'd lost the plot, but as this was some years before he did officially lose the plot I often wondered if there was truth there somewhere, albeit a strange 1900's black and white grainy sort of truth that 1970's kids couldn't get their heads around.

So that's it. You ride 10 miles to work (pit, quarry, mill, sweatshop or chimney sweep) in the rain. Do a 12 hour shift. Ride back, but lamp fails. P!ss in it, relight it, ride home.
Good old days

the-lada-dude, Dec 11, 3:44pm
If your grandad new what voltage they ran on he could have taken a spare battery for it, instead of pissing all over it, silly old bugger

hamishcookie, Dec 11, 5:58pm
Could have given himself a nasty shock

shakespeare6, Dec 11, 8:03pm
same voltage as a Davy lamp

rlr29, Dec 11, 11:07pm
4!

drog, Dec 12, 4:55am
There actually IS a voltage at molecular level. So there.

chebry, Dec 12, 5:06am
I guess youve never used a lighthouse generator for oxy welding

pico42, Dec 12, 8:29am
Do VW's have inside heaters! If so, how do they work!

toyboy3, Dec 12, 8:41am
Carefully

splinter67, Dec 12, 8:44am
Yes they run off the exhaust system if your talking the air cooled variety

chevcamaro, Dec 12, 9:56am
yes it used to be fun when you pulled into a service station in the old beatle and the attendant would race out to help you so you'd ask them to check the water, ahhh the good old days, when people had a sense of humour.roflmfao

splinter67, Dec 12, 10:36am
Or they tried to get at the engine from the front

the-lada-dude, Dec 12, 11:20am
