Looking at buying this.

lazzo, Dec 15, 12:04pm
For that sort of money you could be looking at a brand new Japanese hatchback. Possibly even with a service plan!

jmma, Dec 15, 12:09pm
Could buy a new kitchen for the house too, but that's not what OP is asking!
Sorry, I have no opinion on your question OP (o:

Why would anyone buy a rolex when I can go to the chinese shop and buy a watch for $10.00

gram, Dec 15, 1:02pm
S Tronic.DSG. Bloody nice little car.plenty of power and good economy. Get it serviced by someone who knows what they're doing (not an agent) and it shouldn't be anymore expensive than anything else.

feddi, Dec 15, 1:07pm
Oh thank you! It has plenty of power alright.makes my Impreza feel sluggish lol. Does it have to be a diesel mechanic or can normal mechanic service!

gram, Dec 15, 1:10pm
Couldn't really comment. My local garage services and maintains my diesel but I haven't had any specifically diesel type problems.

lazzo, Dec 15, 1:10pm
The only Rolex's in South Auckland are cheap Bali $2 knock-off's!

just a word of warning on any fancy car.

check the insurance costs and excess first. You may be (unpleasantly) surprised.

icemans1, Dec 15, 10:13pm
eurotrash = expensive to maintain.

paull, Dec 15, 10:22pm
i would talk to the dealer about service costs and then ring around a few euro places and you will get a fair idea what your looking at. damm nice car and i would also look at extending the mechanical warranty for piece of mind cause you never no what could happen and i would say the cost of replacing the gear box or engine would be exspensive.

firob, Dec 15, 11:12pm
and I did buy a rolex for $20.00, so why not

intrade, Dec 16, 5:32am
make sure you have the full service history on paper when you buy a car like that and then you want to take it to places like gilltrap in aucklandor some other placeswhom know how to service vw audi not continental auckland they charged my client for a cambelt that was never done took em to court over it.

thejazzpianoma, Dec 16, 5:46am
Those A3's just use the standard Audi/VW/Skoda mechanicals and electrics. That means parts are cheap (due to volume) and service intervals are long. These drivetrains have had an enormous amount of money spent on development so are exceptionally well sorted.

Like any car you can pay too much for servicing if you go to the wrong place, so be wary of slick dealerships. I would put word out in your area and see what the 3rd party VW/Audi specialists are like. Otherwise, any competent general mechanic could service this, or if you are mechanically minded do it yourself (not at all hard to work on these). Pretty much any part you want can be had by overnightcourier from various genuine third party importers like Qualitat in NZ.

These are a lovely car and blew everything else out of the water when they came out, even today most other manufacturers are barely catching up to where these cars were back in 2003. My only criticism from a cost perspective is that a 2005 year car for that money may be due for a bit of depreciation. If you are cost conscious, rather than worry about service costs, perhaps consider a 2005ish year A3 with similar km's which should be much the same car for half the money. Also, don't forget to compare the VW badged equivalents (The Golf).

Overall, due to the long service intervals, price of parts and relatively easy service, if you go about it right service costs shouldn't be much different from a Corolla. I say this having had 4 of these in the family, one of which we still have which I service myself (and yes I know what the going dealer rates are for service too).

Just service it "by the booK" and its hard to go wrong.

Happy shopping, and excellent choice!

I like the car, but not so much the mileage. Personal choice.

Great cars overall, i'm quite a fan of VAG product.
However, do get the DSG gearbox thoroughly checked out, quite a few horror stories about them from some of my personal friends. (One friend had 3 replacement DGS's under warranty, and when it came to the end of the warranty period got rid of the car asap)
Absolutely brilliant to drive though, but if the DSG goes wrong they can cost a lot of money.
Not trying to scaremonger, just trying to inform.all the best!

feddi, Dec 17, 4:01pm
DSG! is that the auto gearbox!

feddi, Dec 17, 4:46pm
Oh and another question.it will be due for cambelt replacement at 100kms.am I looking at alot for that !or low hundreds or!

ramazon, Dec 23, 8:58pm
I love the VW overall package however he is right get the DSG checked, several class actions on these overseas.ideally have a warranty in place is a given with these.

strobo, Dec 23, 9:28pm
2litre diesel and automatic says it all . A gutless wonder on the pretense of fuel economy! And at that price anA6 would do more credit bein the real car.
Like most I know they fancy the now cheaper euro cars untill certain problems show up with the kms clicking up. the electric /mechanical park brake is one of many things that surface in them with problems flashingof one sort or another.(nice stuff) love it lol
