How to identify a LSD

supernova2, Dec 18, 7:20pm
I've got an old D21 Navara diff lying out the back.Under the grime is what appears to be the remains of a LSD sticker. Is there a way to tell if the diff is an LSD without pulling it to bits!

Next silly question is will running a nonLSD diff with LSD oil cause problems!

rotate the shaft in one dircecton where tyre attach - what direction does the other side turn the same or opposed direction!

smac, Dec 18, 7:38pm
Translation: jack the whole back end up, turn one wheel, what does the other one do!

mm12345, Dec 18, 7:42pm
Probably exactly what it did beforehand, unless finding an old diff out the back performed some miracle - at a distance.

Too true!

I can put the diff on blocks and do the wheel turning trick.Should I lock the pinion as I suspect that will turn before the other wheel.

aj254, Dec 18, 7:56pm
Yes, if you lock the pinion and turn one side, if its an open diff the other side will turn the other way, and it will be quite easy to turn, if its an lsd it will be very hard to/ impossible to turn by hand with the pinion locked.

I suppose so.If it's a diff found out the back covered in grime, I think I'd be pulling it to bits and taking a good look at it before fitting it - including making sure the housing isn't banana shaped.

Why cant any body just answer his question straight up!
Turn one hub, if the other hub turns the same why you have an LSD. Simple.

savanna71, Dec 19, 5:11am
Beause its not quite that simple, a Torsen LSD will not do this,

intrade, Dec 19, 7:10am
yup is what i wanted him to do also lol

sr2, Dec 19, 7:28am
Can't see an ald Nivara diff having a Torsen in it!

the-lada-dude, Dec 19, 7:58am
surely it's not DIFFicult to figure out

Is what you need to hide all those goodies

Quite correct however the post i quoted was in regards to how to identify an LSD and as you and i know that method isnt always correct

trader_84, Dec 19, 11:28am
Nit pickers . its right 9 times outta 10 its good.

00quattro00, Dec 19, 3:25pm
Because thats not always right, some diffs are hard to break some are easy and therefor lead people to beleive that they have an lsd when they dont

trader_84, Dec 19, 3:50pm
Case hardened steel billet . this is where real LSD's start. Spools on the street! Pfffft - BS. Never get a warrant. Detroit Locker! . ok if you like suprises when you would least want one. 9310 alloy steel side gears . none of the factory stuff . and at least a 35 spline count. Anyting' less than this will go helical on you with decent hook, street weight and a liberty gear equipped A833 calling shift points. Aftermarket Phord or Corporate Dana is the choice of housing running a 1350 cross. Brute force Chrysler at the helm and only skinny chicks allowed for rides.

You can use LSD oil in a non LSD diff.

mm12345, Dec 19, 4:30pm
10 times out of 10 if it's a Navara diff.
