I lifted the handle, punched in $80, put the nozzle in, squeezed the trigger and locked it on.
The pump belted straight past $80, fortunately I noticed and stopped it at about $85 which was OK.
I mentioned to the guy inside and he says, "Yes, it's these brand new pumps, you have to punch in the amount first, then lift the handle."
I also noticed the pump doesn't display the amount you have entered, so you just have to assume you got it right.
I'm sure every pump I've ever used has been fine with having the amount entered after lifting the handle. Some pumps won't even let you enter it first as lifting the handle activates it.Am I dreaming!
Sounds like a bloody good way of selling extra petrol to me.The bloke said that everyone's moaning about it and that it becomes a real problem when they are using cash and only have enough on them to cover the amount they were after.
Anyways, if you are using Mobil make sure to get this the right way round and save your xmas money for more interesting liquids than petrol.
Enjoy the holidays.

You would think that they would put a sign on the pump to warn people. Why is it the simple solutions are ignored!

That has NEVER happened to me in my Euro! Merry Xmas Jazz.

To be fair, there is a little instruction sign on it.However, it's small and of course I didn't read it, given that I've used petrol pumps thousands of times and don't need instructions anymore.
Perhaps for a while they should have a large flashing neon sign alerting us to the fact that Mobil HQ have seen fit to change a standard that's been in place since about 1756.
etc.
PS Hi Jazz, Compliments of the Season.

LOL, actually. it hasn't. because the only place around here that sells suitable fuel for our cars is BP.
Merry Christmas!

That's what it was, I didn't have my euro with me, it was the fordmazda.

Yes, I agree little printed signs are no good for this sort of thing, you want something on a flap that covers the buttons so they have to lift it up to punch in the amount, that or a warning on the handle etc. Preferably hand written too so it looks different.
Should only need to be there for a month or so.

Wow never knew it could do that. I've always punched in number before lifting it though.

so im guessing you didnt read the sign on the pump that tells you to enter preset FIRST! just like people who still try to use the pump that has an out of order sign on it. Or the people who lift up the bright yellow cover over the diesel nozzle and then put the nozzle in thier petrol car.

I have never punched in the amount after lifting the handle . always put it in before.
In any case, I always just set it to fill :D

I've always just put the nozzle in and turned it on. For a while there whenstealing was all the rage, it wouldn't go untill you punched in a number or "Fill'.
In some cases you had to make eye contact with the checkout operator and they'd then turn your pump on. They seem to have relaxed that now but it was a huge pain in the arse and you felt like a criminal.
So ths ain't the first time they've dicked around with how the pumps work.

I've never found Mobil to be very user-friendly with their pumps. For a long time they had the EFTPOS terminals on the pumps, and were usually the only servo that had their pumps on prepay so it was easy just to swipe the card and pay there. Then they made the terminals only for the use of Mobilcard holders, then they removed them completely. If their new pumps are as bad as you say, then I would avoid buying there. Regardless of whether you key the amount you require before or after you lift the handle, that is what should be dispensed. It's only a few lines of code in the firmware to make the pumps behave in a different manner. Maybe they are paying peanuts at Gilbarco (the makers of the pumps) and are employing monkeys.

Pak N save pumps are worse, no handle lock so you gotta stand there with your hand on it untill you get your fill. Shitsville.

Thats to stop the dimbulb nans and grandads puling the handle outra the car whilst its still pumping.Self service you have to gear up to the lowest life form intelligence.
