Invercargill to Reefton

Driving distance: 789 km / 490 miles

By Road and Sea
Driving: Approx 11h26m
I reckon you could easily knock some hours off that time . There are a few routes you could take. Go inland to Geraldine follow the inland road turn in by lake Coleridge and you come out by Porters pass carry on over Arthers pass , hang a right at Jacksons and drive through to the Grey vally then turn right and head to Reefton. Should be alot less traffic going that way.

Sweet thanks would. You leave from here to go via alex qtown etc or up east coast via chch sorta. because was going to hamner springs for the hot pools are great

The least complicated way is straight up to Christchurch and across the Lewis Pass to Reefton. You could take the route suggested by desmodave but I'm not convinced its any quicker and certainly if you've not taken that route before there's a greater chance you'll miss a turn and cock it up. I've travelled both routes many times and my advice to someone never travelled through there before is to take the Christchurch and Lewis Pass route.

inkapuka, Dec 23, 7:23am
Yeah might just head up to chch stay there a night then head to hamner stay another night there then go to reefton and then westport

lazzo, Dec 23, 7:27am
Yup that's the way mate, best way.

Be super careful between Timaru and Christchurch and Amberley to The Lewis Pass, the cops have a strong presence in those areas so don't be tempted to speed!

inkapuka, Dec 23, 7:32am
Yeah got the trusty ole radar detector. comes in handy to let you know if the cops are around

I do it in 10 1/2 hours easy going this way with a couple of stops (always get a pie at the Sheffeld Bakery) For it,s a better drive and way quicker than over the Lewis.
