I'm considering respraying the Sentra in the original colour - a metallic red with clear on top. Does anyone know deals with 2k paint know roughly the cost of materials to do this! I'm trying to decide whether its worth doing to increase the value of the car.
The other question would be can a paint shop match to old faded paint! I put a dent in the sill panel which has now been knocked back out but of course after 300,000km the paint down there isnt perfect. If I was to paint that panel only (maybe matching it to the adjacent door!)could they do that or would it always look shiny and new! I also have another section on the rear of the car where some clear in a can went on all opaque so that would need to match the surrounding paint.

It may not increase the value, but if selling new paint may generate more interest. I have looked at car and sun faded paint has put me off.

The 2k part of the job is only the clear coat, and primer.
The actual red colour is 1k.
In a retail situation the biggest cost will be the red basecoat colour. And the prices vary MASSIVELY. For example, I can buy 2 litres of red metallic in Sikkens BT120 for $120 , or Lesonal SB for about $220. And that is the trade price + GST . So retail expect about 30-70%more.
Also keep bumping this thread and Gunhand ( who is down your way ) will be able to tell you the best paint supply shop to go to for retail DIY in Southland.

There are suppliers here who'll do the base (and other) coat. They won't match it, well not very well. I've bought from Premier. Certainly good cost wise. MM if you did all your car yourself it may be worth it.

Looking closer at the paint, I could probably get away with a solid colour, no metallic. I can hardly see the metallic in it unless you look where the sun hasn't shone. In that case can I just do a primer and base coat!

I sell paint auto paint full time, my first comment is you have a car that has done 300,000km that has dull paint. It isn't worth a lot anyway so you don't want spend much on it. First give it a bloody good machine buff and then see how you feel about it. As to the damaged sill and rear panel, just go to your nearest paint distributer and get some base coat made to the correct colour, eye match if neccessary, dulon (laquer) is the cheapest, then clear coat over the top. 1k is the cheapest, buff and sell.

If you're not doing metallic then you could just do primer then 2k colour. Even cheaper is just prime where needed, sand the whole lot - say 400 wet / dry then 2k. Either way a lot of work & $ for that car.

MM --I agree wholehewrtedly with Gammelvind its a 300k car. You will not get a return on your investment doing more than buffing the car well and repair/repainting the damaged area. If however you are looking at this as a training exersize -Ie owes you very little and you wright off the costs then I'd forget the metallic and just repaint it in a nissan straight red. Ive learned how godd a spraypainter I'M not by playing around with old dungers.-Heck I painted the bumpers of a trade in a couple of days ago -they were in primer white and looked terrible.
