Any one who has/ had one of these and can recommend a particular unit to buy (or avoid). am thinking of getting myself one, would prefer something that can easily be moved from car to car. May also consider a helmet cam thing I can also use on my bike and stick in the car when I am driving.Want something of adequate quality, happy to spend up to $2-300

I'm using my smartphone - its a bit of a pain to set up each time, but the works well and has good video quality (obviously this is going to depend on the model you have)

go Pro
easy to swap and use

intrade, Dec 28, 1:37am
well i got my android phone as dashcam with daily-road- voyager.

noswalg, Dec 28, 1:43am
Yep Go Pro is pretty good but costly, I too use my phone because it shoots 1080p video. I did buy a helmet camera from chinavasion.com once that was a few years ago and it was ok then quality has probably got a lot better now. Have a look they have some pretty good deals on car DVR's.

Go Pro looks great but a bit more than I want to spend. I see a lot of $50-100 cams on here but am unsure of their quality, was wondering if someone here has one, or would recommend going a bit more upmarket! If I am only using it in my car does not need to be as robust as a Go Pro as I am not using it off-road or in motorsport, at least not intentionally!

try eds autos they have a good system right on yr upper end of budget

ceedoubleyou, Dec 28, 6:27am
did you mean something like this:
http://www.chinavasion.com/china/wholesale/Car_Accessories/Car_DVR/Mini_Car_Digital_Video_Camera

I thought about bringing some in, but there doesn't seem to be much of market for them here in NZ, where you don't really need to provide evidence of your car crash for insurance purposes. It would be purely for recreational use. Once you add shipping and profit margin, they start getting a bit pricey, but if you get them direct from China and don't mind not having much of a "come back" on warranty, heck it's only $100 approx incl shipping.

xs1100, Dec 28, 7:26am
prob is everyone wants a come back should something go wrong.and as far as insurance can be the differance between right or wrong cant it.same with traffic incidents.anything videoed would have to be considered as evidence in a court case

You guys using mobile phones and other digital cameras are missing the point of a purpose built dash cam with rolling use of memory etc (unless it can do that of course)

petermcg, Dec 29, 8:20am
Ive been selling these around the $60 mark, you need an sd card for them

intrade, Dec 29, 8:23am
What about my istana ssangyoungheadlights!
and they asked for the specs of your dashcam is it the same specs as on dx. or what.

michelle322, Dec 29, 8:38am
I have two like Petermcg has shown, records good daytime, not sure of night vision though, have a look. listing 547496259 .with plug in cigy lighter it auto records and stops when u turn ign key if set up right.ie screen saver off.plug memorycard into computer to playback.Instructions could be better, says press ok button but there isn't one marked, its the record button next to the power button.duh

import it yourself as i did, cost me just under $300, ebay

flockton55, Dec 29, 8:45am
I got one of the Warehouse $99 cameras, No Rules brand, just the same as the $160 one from Jaycar (now at $125). 3 modes, 5MP, 3MP stills, 720p video @ 30fps or VGA@60fps, and car mode. Car mode is same as video, but does 5 minute files, then starts again, storing each with date/time filename. When card is full, overwrites oldest file. About 7 hours storage on a 32G card, so 16 and 8 you can work it out.Needs a class 10 micro SD, class 4 is not fast enough. Shop around, 32GB Class 10 micro SD cost me $50. Has mounts etc for near everything, including windscreen sucker. Got one on my motorcycle, on fairing inside windscreen, gives pretty good results. +++ Highly recommended.

peja, Dec 29, 11:34pm
Thank you for that, will take a look next week.

peja, Dec 29, 11:36pm
If these do real 720p HD will get one, well reviewed by a site I found

Happy to get a 32GB class 10 SD card for it, may consider two cams at that price, one for my classic as well

serf407, Dec 29, 11:55pm
This car-cam in russia must be ok to catch a plane crash.
