Panelbeating sheet metal

trade4us2, Dec 28, 12:19pm
3mm thick wrought iron. Is this possible!
Perhaps with a hydraulic jack, or a large sledgehammer!

intrade, Dec 28, 12:33pm
that aint penal sheet normal 0.8 or 1mm for panel sheets for cars

trader_84, Dec 28, 12:45pm
Mate - that is thick stuff to be wanting to shape by beating. That is almost 'plate' I think. What shape are you after and is there any compound curves in it!

biddy6, Dec 28, 12:47pm
Wrought iron is usually heated in a forge and then shaped with anvil and large hammers .

paull, Dec 28, 12:57pm
yes it is possible but you would need some skill , are you meaning 3mm sheet as wrought iron is generally forming iron by hand with the use of a forge or benders, it is not sheetmetal

trade4us2, Dec 28, 1:04pm
It's supposed to be flat. It's a couple of metres wide so a bit big for a forge.
I thought putting it under a heavy object and jacking it flat with a hydraulic jack might work.

bellky, Dec 28, 1:08pm
Run it over with a truck.

trade4us2, Dec 28, 1:10pm
How about I put several blowtorches on the bent area until it's red hot then beat it flat!

trader_84, Dec 28, 1:13pm
Ahhh got it - it bent now and you want to make it flat!

trade4us2, Dec 28, 1:15pm
Unfortunately it's bent up at each end about 800mm otherwise that would work!

trader_84, Dec 28, 1:16pm
Do what bellky reckons or some variation of it.

trader_84, Dec 28, 1:17pm
oh

trade4us2, Dec 28, 1:20pm
Yes. The middle bit is about 2metres x 1metre and is supposed to be flat
In addition,at each end.the metal has a right angle bend up about 800mm, so it's like a big U shape.

trader_84, Dec 28, 1:20pm
Anyway . 3mm plate is still pretty floppy to handle. A combination of stategically placed dunnage etc and applied weight in certain areas should work. Weight could be a guy or guys standing on certain areas for example.

trader_84, Dec 28, 1:21pm
Was it lifted in the middle or at the ends at some stage and never sprung back!

trader_84, Dec 28, 1:23pm
A strategically placed bead of weld can pull things back also.

trade4us2, Dec 28, 1:29pm
It was bent cold with a large application of force. I reckon it will bend back with enough force.
I bend back yacht masts by putting them between concrete pillars and pushing with a V8.

trade4us2, Dec 28, 1:32pm
I have access to a concrete pit and half a dozen 8 ton jacks. . I could jack it sideways against the walls of the pit.

I think that's what I will do.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Be a damn sight easier to pop in to a trucking yard with it on a trailer and a selection of four by two's.
Just set it up and use a stabilizing leg ram on a hi-ab truck-or a container swing lift truck.

Get yo mama to sit on it.

angelamaree1, Dec 28, 4:08pm
Constantly heat the length of the bend with an oxyacetylene torch, beating it flat with the biggest hammer you can find at the same time (once it's cherry red). It'll work, i've done this sort of thing many times before.

trade4us2, Dec 28, 7:12pm
Yes so have I, but not with about 3 square metres of metal. Won't it cool down too fast!
