Changing own brakepads

This is something I've always wanted to try , but am absolutely filled with fear to try. I have visions of going down a hill, braking, seeing some odd bit of metal going flying in front of me.then thinking "Wow, that was weird", then hit the brake for the upcoming corner, only to have that realization."oh. is that what just came flying off the car".

As someone who'd fall into the newbie category in terms of trying things like this, is replacing brake pads a bit ambitious! (Corona '94) I'm guessing changing brake pads isn't idiot proof.Dare I say it. I was going to check out a Haynes manual or two and some vids here and there and see what I could make of it when the time came. Too ambitious !

So we know it is a 1994 Toyota Corona.

Mr!

There are both male and female mechanics they do have 2 hands 2 feet and a brain

They CAN do the job
Are you physically different!
Can you follow instructions!

master-trader, Dec 30, 12:00am
Ha so it's taking that leap of faith and giving it a whirl I guess. The fear of it going bad and having disastrous results is my main deterrent

snoopy221, Dec 30, 12:04am
It's no biggie- but ya have to realize there were questions in the first post of mine in reply to your post that you have not answered

Shall we say ya answered ms
and ya were asked can ya jack up a wheel and change a wheel!

master-trader, Dec 30, 12:21am
Haha .oh I just thought the questions were you thinking/typingout loud as you typed a response.can I change a wheel ! yeah definitely.

snoopy221, Dec 30, 12:26am
.can I change a wheel ! yeah definitely.

good

because ya can't get access to ya brake pads without being able to do just that.

And it HAS to go a stage further.
I.E.

Using standard vehicle jack or trolley jack!
And access to axle stands!
yes!
no!

Oh and access to tools!
I.E.
Standard vehicle wheel brace or socket set!

Tip 13/16 or 21 mm for wheel nuts a few OTHER sizes needed for disc pad change-

LOL

master-trader, Dec 30, 12:28am
yes to all the above.

icemans1, Dec 30, 12:31am
disc pads are easy to change compared to rear brake shoes. i'm only a DIYer

snoopy221, Dec 30, 12:32am
Be a tad more specific OKIES.
SPECIFICALLY on what ya yessing 2

axle stands!y!
trolley jack!y!
access to tools!y!

Standard vehicle wheel braceand that is all!y!

mmm!

master-trader, Dec 30, 12:37am
yes have access to everything you have put a Y next to. I have more than a standard wheel brace as well, (metric and imperial tools.dunno what the mechanic word for them is, but you know, fractions and mm. Ive just known them as metric and imperial)

snoopy221, Dec 30, 12:40am
K how about a BIG kick ass pair of polygrips!
y! n!

G clamps! y! n!

master-trader, Dec 30, 12:44am
the tools aren't an issue

Those that CAN.DO
Those that CAN NOT.
Read the instructions.

Thing is- YES there ARE pitfalls-

More people die from cars falling off jacks with no axle stands

How many places have you priced the disc pads!
And what prices have you been given!
AND. are YOU prepared to keep this thread bumped until

YOU feel confident to tackle the job!

icemans1, Dec 30, 1:26am
lol snoopy, i like ya posting mate

gammelvind, Dec 30, 5:25am
The main danger is falling off the jack and hurting you. That sorted follow the instructions in the manual. Remember to replace those skinny little bits of metal onto the back of the new pads, they don't look like much but they are important.

n1smo_gtir, Dec 30, 6:33am
I've done my first brakepads in a Toyota MR2 and it was sweet as. Have a look on YouTube for guidance. Make sure you get replacement brake fluids n bleed the brakes. Allow plenty of time. Easier to bleed brakes with 2 people but it is possible to do on ur own. After all is done, double check all nuts n bolts back in n test drive on flat area.

Good basic answers from Snoops as usual, follow his advice.

Watch that. Then have it loaded on the computer while you're doing it and refer back to it as needed. Guy who makes the vid is v.good and clear with his instructions ( he's got many other DIY car vids) =)

oscar220, Dec 30, 6:57am
Never had to bleed the brakes when I have just changed brake pads.

Hardest part fora newbee is returning the piston to fit new (thicker) pads.
Also watch the fluid level in the master cylinder, if it has been topped up at any time, when the piston is pushed back in brake fluid will overflow.

if youve got a bit of common sense and access to you tube and some basic tools its not a biggie. one thing on your side is that if you get a bit lost on the front rightthen you always have the front left as a comparison to get you back on track.
go for it
good luck

splinter67, Dec 30, 7:07am
Its not that hard to do just dont do a Mark Larkum (v8 supercar roving reporter ) and put the pads in backwards.

kazbanz, Dec 30, 7:08am
OP cutting through all the fuzz. A copetent mechanic could change a set of pads each side in 5 minutes JUST changing pads.
Personally If I had never changed pads before I would have a competant mechanic supervise

llortmt, Dec 30, 7:21am
Finally some decent advice.

muzzaandmich, Dec 30, 7:28am
Another. accident going out to happen!.
