Anyone been down the path of having to prove owner

ally-oop, Jan 4, 7:21pm
.ship (in this case a motorcycle-but i'm sure it'd be the same as with a car) (i'm just wondering, as the often so-called "ownership papers" are actually titled "certificate of registration", and they record the "registered PERSON" (not "OWNER") and it states at the bottom that the motor vehicle register doesn't record legal ownership (although, unhelpfully it doesn't mention what actually does certify legal ownership).
My particular situation is that i've put my motorcycle into my mate's name for technical reasons (long story-and not very interesting) but it's only a technicality and it hasn't changed locations or anything and i'm wondering if i need to bring it to the attention of my insurance company. (p.s it's not on the road at the moment, so it's not an accident i'd ever have to claim on, only theft)t.i.a for any informed info, cheers!

p.s (i'm not in a position where i need to prove that i own it, but just wondering what (if anything) i should do with regards to insurance company while it's REGISTERED in my mate's name for a year or so.

"(long story-and not very interesting)"

We have plenty of time, do tell.I for one enjoy a good story

FWIW a few years ago I had to prove to a policeman that I was the owner of a particular vehicle and the certificate of ownership was good enough for him.

i don't have plenty of time lol-and i'm a slow typer

ally-oop, Jan 4, 7:37pm
cheers, but i can't imagine that was a very high-stakes situation (!)

Problem solved (o:

ally-oop, Jan 4, 8:24pm
i don't actually have a problem at the moment and i agree that a receipt should be the start and finish of it, however i do wonder if, should push-come-to-shove, an insurance company would squirm out of a payout for a vehicle stolen while in my physical possession but while registered in another person's name.

I tried to insure a car that was not registered to me they would not let me AMI that same car got stolen I was unable to report it stolen because it was not registered to me.

saxman99, Jan 4, 8:29pm
Well, they were getting ready to "have me accompany them" in order to "assist with their enquiries". Basically there was a paperwork cockup somewhere down the line and it appeared I was trying to steal the car. ( I wasn't).

ally-oop, Jan 4, 8:30pm
hmmm.interesting.did they go into their reasons exactly why not!

ally-oop, Jan 4, 8:40pm
interesting.lol i always find it sounds so quaint when they report some horrific crime and then that "a man is helping police with their enquiries" -it sounds like some civic minded soul is going out of his way to volunteer his time to help the police completely out of the milk of human kindness lol
hey i had a nosey at your profile and wondered if you ever gigged in a dive as crummy as the one described by robbie robertson of 'the band', that i think was jack ruby's club and was so crummy it had a crowd of about 5 people and a one-armed gogo dancer hahap.s. r.i.p clarence clemons

pickles26, Jan 4, 8:42pm
to them it proves ownership

ally-oop, Jan 4, 8:46pm
crazy really, they're quite wrong about that, did you press the point with them-were they quite adamant!

purple666, Jan 4, 9:20pm
The lazy coppers just use the name it was last rego'd to, even if you have had it revined etc. Lucky Judges know what they are doing.

ally-oop, Jan 4, 9:23pm
i think that technically you're correct-and i'd damn well hope so.

granada, Jan 4, 9:35pm
We dont need to know the reason why. But you could register the vehicle in your mates name, insure it in his name and register a debt against the bike( finance him into it ) so that if it gets stolen then you would be the one whom got paid out.all paper work would have to be above board and legit.
Im sure a few dealers here could fill in the gaps
