Custom vans were popular in the 70's with the rise of surf culture. I had a custom van poster on my wall as a kid.

I'll be there and if all goes well so will the boss and maybe the other two. Hey neville48, Chauvanist was a cool van, along with UFO and Ice Spirit plus plenty more. I do wonder where they all are now and if any are still hiding away in someones shed. My first Nationals was THE first Nationals at Paraparaumu 1977. Makes this one the 36th Nationals. Roll on 2017 for the 40th.

I went to a meet at Foxton - or was it Levin - about 1980. Several hundred vans there including plenty of CF Bedfords and Transits. I recall a Beddie ( I think ) with extended body and a lazy axle and another with a cut down rear body and a 5th wheeler attached .Burnout comp in the supermarket carpark had huge smoke palls with a one impressive lot caused by a 460 cube Dodge ( ! ) powered Beddie or Transit ! Hard to tell through the smoke :-)Plenty of flashy interiors and paint jobs.Got a few van mags from back then too.The Yanks had it easy as their base vans likely had a 6 and they could option up through small to big block 8s, captains chairs, consoles and full carpet etc interiors while we had bare 4 cylinder CFs and Transits or Falcon/Holden/Escort panel vans. Alloy wheels were about the only readily available optionNever saw a custom Marina van for some reason .
