ever seen an air bag actually go off!, we put one in a metal letterbox and it turned it inside out, then we put a chair over one and it lifted it high as the roof on a house, not really relevant but hell of a blast

It's nice to think that your car is "uncrashable" or some such. All the technology in the world cannot prevent some crashes, because it's not just you that's being factored in - it's the road and the environment, and the other driver/s.

And there is no way in hell I would own a car without airbags. My current car also has the curtain airbags, which help reduce the incidence of head injury.I also made sure I had isofix, for similar reasons.

Have seen many accidents where the modiern, air-bag fitted car inhabitants walked away with bruises, and the opposing car inhabitants were wheeled away.Airbags can cause injuries, as can seatbelts, but neither as severe as the injuries sustained without them.

the air bags ate more thana it of a bump to go off, they only pop when you need them. In my crash, only my two went off, the passenger seat was empty, so those bags didn't deploy. I spend a lot of tie off road and treat the ute fairly hard, and never had anysuggestionof them going off.

They require a bit to set off. They need the G Force sensor triggered, as well as two crash sensors (in most cases, some systems will be different). And then, it takes note of seat position (If too far forward may not deploy on a small crash due to it being higher chance of being more damage to passenger), if there is a passenger in the car etc etc.
