No you can't.The VIRM states that if you change a belt to other than the manufacturers spec then you need approval from the manufacturer to do so; they are very unlikely to provide this.

How do aftermarket seatbelt companies get away with it then Saxman!
If it fits, looks the part and looks like it is how it is supposed to be, (no massive excess, facing hte wrong way etc) then I doubt the inspector will even notice it.

Don't know. I wondered that too, but the virm appears to be clear, unless I'm reading it wrong.Perhaps it's accepted that seatbelts are "all created equal " and so if fitted correctly to original mounts then they automatically meet the specs.
I started reading but gave up, be in there somewhere

how would anyone know what brand its from! last 1 was a different colour,(grey) compared to the charcoal the rest are and it was ok, the wof inspector just checked it was frayed/damaged like the old 1

They have tags or a stamp on them, usually by where they bolt into on the car. A lot of cars though it would be a bit of work to actually find it, removing trim/seat bases/upholstery etc to find it. As long as it secures fine, isn't fraying, discoloured or damaged etc, I don't have a problem with it.

Leave a penthouse on the back seat when you go for a wof.

You're misreading the VIRM. What is stated is about modifying a belt assembly, not simply replacing a belt assembly with a different but complete, as-manufactured assembly.

I had a crazy problem once.WOF man insisted that i had to have a center lap belt ina car that had never had one.Went home, took belt from our other car, bolted it in with existing bolts and passed.Went home and took it out and was never asked again in the next 10 years.Who knows what planet WOF man was on that day.
