wondering how much a second hand motor would cost and were could I get one

I am pretty sure they just ran the standard Nissan engines as available in the Primera at the time. (some Nissan nut would tell you for certain) So trademe, wreckers etc should have them.
However, I would say do your math VERY carefully, even if doing it yourself and fitting a $350 motor its not going to be worth the effort IMO. Assuming the car is yours you would be better to sell it for scrap or parts and start fresh with something decent.
The Presea is very old, nothing special and while overvalued, still not worth much even when going.

Woody-The presea runs either the 1500cc Nissan sunnny/lucino/pulsar engineor thePrimera/bluebird/avenir engine. The first thing you need to do is open up the bonnet and have a look at the "build" plate. On it will be the chasis number, the engine size and the engine number.Come back to us with the first numbers of the engine number and the engine size and we will see what we can do to help.

It will be if the rest of the vehicle is in good nick. Some Preseas use GA series engines, you can swap it in a couple of days, no problem.

$350 engine, which you will have to pay freight or go to effort to collect. Plus coolant and numerous other consumables and service parts (because if you are going to the effort you should do it properly), plus two days of filthy work on a coming up 20 year old car, that's worth very little, and will no doubt have numerous other things coming due for attention.
Simply not worth the effort in my opinion, but if you enjoy that sort of thing go for gold. I would put the effort into something that is worthwhile in the end.
Plenty of much nicer later model vehicles with problems less time consuming than that come up on here for next to nothing on a regular basis. That's what I would (and do) put my effort into.

I see where you're coming from, but OP already has a car. Investing $500 odd + one weekend will get the car back on the road. Drive it for another year and sell it for $1500.
However, if OP has to pay someone for the labour, then I agree with you. It's a waste of time spending money on it.

Fair enough, we have spelled out both sides of the argument, its up to them from there, they should have a fairly good idea of what to expect. Although I think $500ish is a bit optimistic, in my experience these things usually start to add up. Especially if you are not in a commercial workshop with a great collection of tools and consumables within easy reach.

Im NOT the TM narc but are you speaking on behalf of woody here! If so then it doesn't sound terminal.Replace the cam oil feed bars which I bet are blocked up. Then fit a new cam.

our mate is a towey and is sourcing a second hand motor for us-we were just wondering how much the job/engine would cost us as he didn't tell us-his mate will put the motor in for us-our towey mate said the engines basically screwed as he was the one to pick the car up off the motor way.

What engine is in it!
budget $100 for fluids, if you are keeping it then might pay to put a clutch in, that costs about $150 for a SR engine, a bit less for a GA
Just a straight swap really should take no more than 4 hours. Easy to get in and out if you have an engine crane. Apparently better to drop out the bottom but ive always just taken bonnet off and lifted them out and never had any issues. Sometimes you have to take alternator off to give a bit more clearance but no biggie.
If it was a euro which was about to blow up again then no sense spending even $5 on it, but these are generally pretty good and if you think the body is in worthy condition of getting a new powerplant then go for it. Far cheaper than getting a new car anyway

ENGINE NUMBER IS SR-18 SIZE OR CC RATING 1838 SO HOW MUCH IS A SECOND HAND ONE

should be able to pick one up for a couple hundy. Just make sure its not all sludged up under the oil cap as poor maintenance really hurts those engines. Make sure its the same type as your one, the later ones had a different intake and head on them and the wiring is not the same. I think need the 'high port' model, which has the intake sitting down low. There are also two tunes to them, pulsar and nx coupe have more power than the bluebird or primera or presea ones. I don't know if they will just bolt ini though

Just get a new car if you have to ask on here then I wouldn't go there on an engine exchange.
