Car is a 01 vx commodore v6

join into the wire that goes to the lighter socket

Just drive to theNZ speed limit in your 01 vx commodore v6, and you wont need a radar.

If you really really need to speed, then finda safe back road, where a police speed detector will never need to be.

Get a life bud i dont speed its just a handy device to have

would that be enough power to do both cig and radar!

grangies, Feb 9, 8:56pm
OK .

So why is it handy to have then! lol.

More than enough. You should appropriately fuse the hard wired connection on the +ve side immediately after the tie in - fuses are to protect the wiring in the case of a short and no doubt the wire won't be able to do 10 or 15A without melting the insulation, which is what the wiring to the cigarette socket will be fused to.

It actually sounds like you're out of your depth though.

It's good to know when the government is spying on you.

More to the point why do you have a radar fitted in your car!Are you aspy!

superglue the detector to the top of your baseball cap
It's the latest trend and your mates will think it looks real cool.

If your radar detector normaly plugs into the cig lighter then into a usb plug on the unit then it is not 12 volt it is probably 5 volt so you need to remember that. The cig lighter plug has plenty to drive the detector as it does not draw much power, I can get you a hard wire kit as I have sold them in the past to hardwire GPS trackers in cars.

So you have some warning of upcoming traffic chaos and danger caused by cops and speed camera's hiding in the middle of passing lanes.

meathead_timaru, Feb 10, 10:43am
Good point. Just because something plugs into a 12V supply does not mean it's a 12V appliance.

Excellent post Jazz! This business of policing passing lanes where it is often the only opportunity that you may have in a long time to get past these bozos that drive along at less than the speed limit until they arrive at a passing lane and then speed up to the limit for goodness sake. They are the ones causing the danger. You can't pass a car very well with a relative speed of about 3-4 KPH in the distance that you have available.Bring back the old rule - where you could speed up above the limit briefly to safely complete the pass, and then drop back to the limit. The way that passing lanes are used now for "easy revenue" we may as well not have any.

you say easy revenue.i got a ticket for 7km in a camper doing 97km on the takapau planes 16km straight road fine day and no traffic that just revenue collecting!

Egg

kimbo88, Feb 10, 3:35pm
Yep I would classify that as revenue collection for sure.

The Op has only talked about Radar, nothing about a detector so the questions still is why does he find it handy to have radar in his car!
