Red arrow running.

Anyone do this regulary!Noticed it in the herald this morning. The arrows in other cities seem to go out allowing you to turn when the way is clear as opposed to holding traffic for a full cycle.

Yes i do it chch they go out nelson they don't sometimes you wait two cycles with no traffic passing nelsons traffic management has a lot to be desired for compared to other cities i have lived in

In the states you can turn right on a red light if the way is clear,[unless signposted otherwise] why we do not implement this for a left turn I do not know, it does work.

if you're talking about the right turn red arrow, then yes it is ridiculous that it holds up traffic when the way is clear to make a right turn. Some sets of traffic lights in Hamilton have the right turn red arrow go off, allowing you to decide to go if the way is clear. But some annoyingly hold you for a phase even when it would be quite safe to proceed. No consistency with this, and no defining rule to say you can proceed right if the way is clear.

But then the red light for through traffic can be red and theres no cars at all so do we just make it optional to go if the way is clear.I think not.

There are no situations where a red arrow for right turning vehicles is warranted. But there are situations where a green right turn arrow is though, such as where visibility is limited. Unfortunately, the use of red right turn arrows is now rife because people are becoming more stupid. Which in turn means they'll install yet more of the red right turn arrows.

Yes, I often ignore them. They serve no purpose. We must already give way to pedestrians crossing with a signal, along with other vehicles and we must ensure the way is clear before proceeding.

And we should be allowed to turn left on a red light anywhere. Unfortunately, due to the increasing amount of stupid people driving, this becomes less and less likely to actually become a reality by the day.

If you're sitting waiting to turn right with a green light and a red right turn arrow, there are no other vehicles that will be proceeding against you that you would otherwise not already have to give way to if there was no red arrow illuminated. It's redundant. You give way to vehicles going straight and you give way to vehicles turning left. You do not cross paths with opposing vehicles turning right.

Nice to see I'm not alone.I routinly run red arrows. Some intersections I concede that there is an issue with a rise or corner where it may be impossible to see oncoming traffic but on the whole. they are a waste of time and money. Its odd that we aren't trusted to make such a basic call when driving. esp when the road is obviously clear.

I don't even slow down for traffic lights anymore. Good luck everybody else!

I do it all the time too. There is one particular intersection that has just been opened here and there is no need for the lights let alone a right turn arrow.

the reason is for the idiots that can actually make a decsion based on logic in this world so therefore has to be dumbed down for everyone.came across a classic example the other night "this older lady from another country just pulled out of a park didnt look didnt do anything" just straight into drive and off and then gave me a dirty look for going round her hahaha luckily was in a supermarket carpark but i thought what if some mother had been pushing a child in a pram along side her
