Do I need LVV Certification if?

mram, Feb 11, 6:53pm
I change a 3.5 rover and 4speed manual box landrover to 3.9 rover and auto, will be all OEM parts on the factory mount positions, and using a landrover discovery crossmember!

Yes you do, you are fitting a larger capacity engine.Whether it is bolt in or not is irrelevant.

mram, Feb 11, 6:59pm
I was reading something about no more than 20% of original hp was ok

a.woodrow, Feb 11, 7:00pm
With the original engine

johnf_456, Feb 11, 7:00pm
Correct

franc123, Feb 11, 7:03pm
That only applies if you were doing mods to the 3.5, it doesn't mean you are allowed to fit a bigger capacity motor without cert to achieve that 20%.

Click on the box marked tables and images, its the bit you are interested in.

Wow thank you, makes me wonder about all the vehicles on the road that have bigger engines from the same family bolted up, guess if they can't see it they won't know, many thanks for your help

franc123, Feb 11, 8:09pm
An alert insurance assessor or serious crash unit investigator might though.

lugee, Feb 11, 8:11pm
Yeah, you'd very likely get away with it until the vehicle was involved in a crash. Things could get ugly then.

neville48, Feb 11, 8:28pm
"just do it" to coin a phrase, he who hesitates is lost forever.

desertcolt07, Feb 12, 9:25am
no thats for fitting drive shaft hoops.

bill-robinson, Feb 12, 9:39am
unfortunately that manual has been replaced with the $200 a copy version.

mrfxit, Feb 12, 3:12pm
Yea that CC rating bit is a bit off when you can bolt in a bigger engine but of the same performance level.
Yet you can increase performance up to 20% on the OEM engine (without a turbo etc) as long as you don't fit bigger pistons.
THO .
In those cases, it's more to do with the potential performance available options on he bigger engine rather then the CC increase

mrfxit, Feb 12, 3:23pm
Part of the problem is the bigger CC version will most likely have extra spot welds & thinker steel panels in specific places

socram, Feb 12, 5:04pm
A 20% increase in capacity from 3.5 takes it over the 3.9 to 4.2 and they are effectively the same engine.Changing the crossmember is maybe the relevant issue regarding LVVTA - but I am only guessing here.

a.woodrow, Feb 12, 5:11pm
It's not 20% increase in capacity that is permitted though, it's 20% increase in power

morrisman1, Feb 12, 5:13pm
technically as soon as you more a standard engine oversize you need cert, not that anyone would ever know but it shows how archaic the system is.

mrfxit, Feb 12, 6:55pm
As I said above. the 0 increase in CC rating is to stop ppl swapping from 1 basic series engine that doesn't have a lot of mods available to another basic version that does have a lot of mods available & THEN hotting it up with factory gear

Eg: 92 sohc v6 1.8ltr Galant to a base model 2ltr dohc v6 & then fitting factory mod gear, even tho it bolts directly in with factory mounts etc

This . whats the worst that can happen - you get picked up and told you need a cert! Even if it has a cert . who says the Insurance company is going to accept that it is the 'same' vehicle they insured when they did! And if you did approach them first . and they said yeppers - do it (along with 'and we will fuel your pigs so they are ready for flight dear customer') then why would you want to willingly feed the certification gravy train!
