Can you explain this way of thinking?

I emailed a dealer on here about a car.
The car is in Auckland and I am in the Waikato.
Was advertised for $10900 or there about.
I asked them if they would take $9,000 for the vehicle subject to an inspection.
I have had no response. and its been 4 days.
So I guess the answer is no. but no response to try and engage with a potential customer!

Or maybe I should have approached it differently!

if you want the caruse the phone

NZTools, Feb 12, 8:29am
Yup. You demonstrated to the dealer in your first contact that you are what is reffered to as a "price customer" you are not particularly interested in good service, or the quality of the product.

This, in any trade, usualy means you will become a big pain in the assfor the seller.

phillip.weston, Feb 12, 8:37am
Is the car priced well at $10,990 or can you show by looking at other dealer examples that it's $2,000 overpriced! If that car is priced well to begin with, that $2,000 off is probably their margin right there, and they still by law have to stand behind the car they sell.

As others have said, if you were even the slightest bit serious you would pick up the phone and call them. If you can prove you are a serious buyer, many dealers will even run it down to you and show it.

I've negotiated my last 3 car deals by e-mail from offer to purchase.

Dealers are tired of keyboard warriors offering peanuts using abrupt e-mails often by people with no intention of actually buying.

"Would u take $9k for dat Suby!" May not get get a reply.

Whereas:

"Hello, Toby Monk here, I'm interested in the Subaru you have for sale at $10,900, I am a cash buyer and keen to purchase quickly, my budget is $9000, can you let me know if we can do a deal at that price! I look forward to hearing from you, regards for now , Toby"

A reply will be in your inbox shortly.

spongefrisk, Feb 12, 11:21am
Thanks for the replys.
I guess I am a price customer to a degree as I know the type of car I am after, but it does need a service history.
In terms of service from a dealer I am not expecting much. Once I buy the car its my responsibility as I see it. And my responsibity to check it out pre purchase.
Yes using the phone is probably the best option. But this was at night when I was trawling through the latest listings so I fired off an email thinking it was the easiest way at the time. (but obviously not the most effective!)
I am not wedded to that car as I know there will be another one coming along. I have been keeping an eye out for about a year now on various models etc. Have just finally got to having the money to purchase.
In fact this car has been in his stock for awhile now as I have seen it listed in the past. Which is one of the reasons I offered a lower price although I think its reasonably priced. But if you don't ask you don't get, so worth a try.

Thanks guys, plenty of food for thought. Much appreciated.

Don't waste your time with that dealer.

The dealer has shown they can't be bothered with you.

If you make any further effort with that dealer; you'll be doing it on their terms: Don't do it. Don't be a sucker.

kazbanz, Feb 12, 11:31am
OP- Im not going to try to defend the specific dealers actions -or lack of.
BUT in fairness I have to cover off a couple of points.
First (I can't speak for anyone else here just my experience)
There have been issues with enquiries sent from TM/Autobase.Ive found a few have been sent to spam rather than to my inbox.
Second any hotmail account enquiries have been going to spam mail,
So yep it may be how you phrased the enquiry but also possible the enquiry hasn't been received.

everyone's a price customer

carstauranga001, Feb 12, 4:50pm
So please explain this. A buyer emails me the other day off a Trade Me listing with one line "what is your best price on this car!" So I reply something like "Thank you for your enquiry on my XXXX. I would like to discuss pricing with you personally so could you please call me on my freephone 0800 xxxxxxxx at a time which suits you. That's two days ago and they havn't contacted me back by any means. Have I handled this wrong! Were they just a waste of time anyway expecting an unrealistic price! Why not pick up the phone!

stevo2, Feb 12, 5:14pm
You will find its a lot of the younger ones will txt or email rather than actually talk to a real person.
Maybe they are scared they may get talked into buying something they dont want or may pay to much!
Seems with all this txting and emails etc, some of the younger ones are losing the art of conversation.

carstauranga001, Feb 12, 5:21pm
I agree, but why not email back then and more than one sentence! How much is too much! Car is $11995, maybe they are 8K buyers. If so why not say that. Just a sentance "what is your best price" I find quite annoying. Often no please orthanks, let alone a good morning! I always reply to enquiries but probably four out of five never reply back. On the other hand probably four out of five who phone off the internet end up buyers.

kazbanz, Feb 12, 6:12pm
Heres some examples of the sort of e mails we get every day -I promise this it totally unedited -exept for car spercific stuff that might get me in trouble
"Please give me a wholesale price"
"hi thr cn u take an offer of $xxxx cash thnx"
"hi there, how much for weekly repayments for car! thanks"
"Will you take $xxxxx !"

sw20, Feb 12, 6:44pm
It annoys me when people offer a price as the first point of contact.

They have played the haggling card. The price they offer is now the price. Regardless of how the car is actually presented. The prospective buyer might show up to look at the vehicle after a 'will you take $ xxxx today!' text. Then find faults. What are they going to do! Offer less! The seller will just invite them to enjoy sex and travel.

carstauranga001, Feb 12, 6:45pm
You too aye.

kazbanz, Feb 12, 6:52pm
No mate on the odd occassion they actually turn up they use your acceptance of their "offer" as the START point of their negotiations.every bump and chip and mark is a reduction in the offered price

kazbanz, Feb 12, 6:54pm
Thats just three random pulled from todays lot.

sw20, Feb 12, 7:04pm
Last time I got a "will you take $3000 cash today!" text I replied, yes, bring the cash over drive it away.

Got one back saying 'oh yeah gotta get some money together, give me a couple of days'

Dickhead.

gman35, Feb 12, 9:47pm
I get the same in my bike shop , via email :- "can you get the xxxx model in and how much !" I will give a very lenthy reply (with a really low price) and even other options , while asking what size they may require etc. I get an answer about 1 out of 10 times , even if you got SOME sort of reply (even a bl**dy stupid offer of some kind) it would feel like you were not totally wasting your time. I reckon 90% of people don't have an actual passion for a particular item any more ("I like that , I will buy it") , it's just"I wonder what's the cheapest I could get it for !".

tgray, Feb 13, 6:08am
I don't bother with all that. All my cars are sold at a fixed price - most with a mere $500 markup, so no room to move anyway.
Makes it all nice and simple for the buyer (and seller!).

smac, Feb 13, 6:37am
Same thing happens privately. Last car I sold a guy went on a test drive, having already said he thought my price was fair. He came back and started off listing all these things 'wrong'.all of which were declared in the ad. He follows up with "so with that in mind, how much!". No deal, muppet.

tgray, Feb 13, 6:43am
People who try that on, I say "So, this sounds like it's not the car for you then".

monsieurl, Feb 13, 6:48am
That's why I never trade with car dealers! I own 2 higher end BMW's and have saved several thousand dollars on each by buying them privately through car enthusiasts online, the cars were all better looked after and serviced then ones I had seen in car yards plus i didn't have to deal with car sales people!

christian28, Feb 13, 6:52am
Can anyone tell me where I could purchase a try mounted lockable toolbox for a Falcon ute! Ive got a 2011 with a hard lid on it and prefer an open tray. Cheers

christian28, Feb 13, 6:52am
* tray mounted that is.
