Well done you helping them out but OMG seriously.a long journey from Auckland to Wellington in that car.I hope they made it alright but I'd never risk a trip like that nor my family in a car that's just not maintained like that!

Some people think a car and its parts will last forever without maintenance. They especially forget the tyres, the only thing that connects their car to the road.

Neither would anyone else with common sense. There was a time long ago now where I used to sympathise to a degree with these types but not now. Its the duty of every driver to ensure that their vehicle is cared for adequately in terms of its mechanical maintenance AND its safety critical areas, if thats not possible then invest in a bicycle, good walking shoes or bus passes. Its not the responsibilty of testing station staff, petrol station attendants or anyone else.

25%! Amazing percentage. Every time one of our family vehicles goes for a warrant we check all lights etc before we go. Almost allways we get a warrant no problems.

Yes, the operative word being "inconvenience". We need roadside checks, and if a vehicle is unsafe to drive, or even has no reg or wof, it should not be allowed to be driven away, it should be removed from the scene on a truck at the owner's expense.

Think what you like - the opinion of someone who thinks doing the same thing over and over again will have a different result carries no weight with anyone with more than half a brain.

I did worry about them for a while after, they seemed like really nice people with no money or any knowledge about looking after a car. The guy watched what I was doing really closely, maybe to learn. I would not have driven the car in that condition with kids in the back but I am fussy with my families vehicles. Usually fix them for free or parts only but I know that they are safe and fit for the road.

I think there area good number of cars out there that has a WOF because of the short cuts that sellers do before they sell their car. As i have recently experience, we ask all the Q on Trade Me, and seller said 'no other damage' apart from a cracked back light. So placed bid, won and went over to pay over $2500. in cash and drove it home. (about 17kilometres from sellers home). And we pull in to our driveway, this car was smelling smoke. So the next day we take to a garage to check it out. Journey to garage/mechanic 10.6 kilometres. The car was smoking scarily and drivers were tootting at us. When we drove in, the mechanic came straight to our car and said ' you got a massive oil leak onto your exhaust and it can catch fire'. And that we will not get a WOF with that. He degreased, and water blasted under the car and told us that we got a massive leak coming from between engine and transmission. The seals need replacing.'
The mechanic said it is common ofsellers taking car to water blast and cleaned under the vehicle before the WOF check. AndWof places would not be able to detect oil leak if it is cleaned out with water blasting.
i say take the licence plate and report these vehicles on the road.
