i have an auto hilux, its the second one i've had.i service quite a few utes all of different parentage, most of the problems i've seen with manual utes is the gear ratios seem so high, when people tow a boat/whatever they end up slipping the clutch.resulting in problems.Modern autos perform well.as to petrol/diesel.depends on your use.

I'd be thinking of buying an Isuzu D Max, Ford Ranger or a Mitsi Triton instead.

I'd get a diesel and auto personally. As for resale value, double cab utes are always in high demand, so not something I'd worry about.

I think they are all diesel.
And I guess they are just a re-baged Isuzu D-Max

Have a look at the Ford Ranger if you have an open mind on the subject.

I have a customer with a 2008 and a 2012 (both turbo diesel) them and I believe that all things considered the 2008 is the better driving Ute. Be aware an oil filter is only currently available for the 2012 from GM (Holden) and costs in the region of $70 trade plus it takes 7ltr of 5w30 fully synthetic oil making a lube service a couple of hundred dollars minimum. Both have so far been reliable that said the 2008's clutch slave cylinder recently went $1200 trade (genuine only) but was just covered under warranty.

Oooohhh, lots of conflicting advice here, the op will be tossing and turning all night.
My 2 cents worth:
In the 'new' current model ute segment there are two stand out models and unfortunately the Colorado isn't one of them.
VW Amarok Ford Ranger
The Mazda BT50 is the same as the Ranger but most people can't live with looks.
The Colorado uses old tech (as does the hugely outdated Hilux) and just can't compete with the muscular engined Ford or VW.
I tried all the utes over a 3 month period and thought I'd end up in the Ranger but for a ute that has a 60% bigger engine than the Amarok's it left me underwhelmed - maybe the one I tried was off song but it just didn't pull as well as I thought and won't get anywhere near the 7.5lts/100kms my Amarok is now averaging.
25,000kms Iater I like mine so much that I'm selling my BMW as I always prefer driving my ute.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I thought they were just rebadged Isuzu's as well, apparently not, while having my VE ute serviced at Ebbetts in Wgtn I had a look at one in the show room and was told by the salesman, that were Chevy designed in the USA but built in Thailand.

if you do decide to get a Colorado, go for the white paint option.
it has incredible dirt & mud repelling technologies

hehehe.yeah! saw that on the ad as well. not a speck of dirt on the ute going through mud.

buy a ranger or BT50 instead! its lightyears ahead of the colorado. god those colorados are soooo cheaply made. they even look cheap.

One more vote for the Amarok in either manual or auto but ESPECIALLY if you decide on auto as you then get 8 gears!
Just can't touch the Amarok, it blows the others out of the water, only thing that comes close is the Ford but its still the poor cousin.
With the VW you get a much better Ute all round, including value for money.

Yeah well lol, but I know the Ford / Mazda, Mitsi and Isuzu are as well, not sure about Nissan and Toyota.

I find the new Mazda BT50 to be ridiculously over sized.
The only one I have physically engaged with, was fixing a bumper that was scratched before it's brand new delivery to a customer.
It was just a basic 2 door cab, with a flat deck. But it seemed like a MASSIVE body/cab, with a normal sized flat deck.
The body seemed like a crappily built behemoth, sitting on a standard ute ladder frame chassis. Flimsy sheet-metal, and budget clip on plastic components on top of a light truck chassis.

Imagine what a Great Wall would be like then, wouldn't own one unless I won it.

Really!Have a look underneath one, the chassis in particular is a solid piece of equipment, its not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. The drivetrain is a mix of Eaton and GM hardware and is also solidly made. The rest of the vehicle is not out of line with any other Thai built ute, in some areas better.

A close friend wanted a bt50 but got a brand new colarado as a company vehicle and he hates it, his old work vehicle was a 04 rodeo. His ute has between 300 and 550 kg on the back and between 2000 and 3000kg of trailer most days. The ranger/bt50 is better by a long way, we drove them back to back. The BT50 was quite happy with 3000kg behind it, I have not driven an amorak, don't know anyone with one and don't know anything about them.

I know the OP was talking about a double cab, but the 4 door cab plus is the option I would have. The Amarok doesnt do that!

read the reviews. what motoring writers say about the colorado (and most importantly, what they DONT say, you get a clear picture of chintsey poorley built junk.)
