What would it cost to have air conditioning .

hanmer, Mar 9, 8:13am
put in a 15yr old mitsi.still as good as gold but no one wants to drive it now because no aircon.what wld be a good place out here in auckland!

johnf_456, Mar 9, 8:14am
You would be better off getting a replacement car

skull, Mar 9, 8:15am
Probably cost you something equivalent or more than the car is worth and will add zero resale value.

unbeatabull, Mar 9, 8:41am
Has it got an A/C System that just been neglected or does it not have any A/C at all!

First option could be viable. If it has nothing A/C related in the vehicle at all, your looking at thousands of dollars.

hanmer, Mar 9, 8:56am
OH NO!forget it.
thanks for all your help.will wait till the weather gets cooler ;);)
ubbull, it has no system at all and i'm not able to spend so much.but thanks for your help.
over 'n' out!

Try looking in the USA sites.
Pretty sure you can get kits over there for all sorts of situations, maybe even try some of the USA trucking forms.
It would probably be more in the line of a "retro fit kit" or small portable unit that runs on 12v that could be mounted under the dash/footwell area.

As for #2 & #3 comments . WIMPS ;-)

if it's a common car I would just find the air con parts from pick a part. My dad had air con retrofitted into his '86 Sigma not long after it was new and I don't think it cost a huge amount at the time. They just sourced the parts from a wreck.

elect70, Mar 9, 12:11pm
hardest & labour intensive part is removing the dash & puttingevaporator in. .Ora aftermarketunitif cant find 1 atwreckers. Crowd calledNZ Auto airdistrubutorssellafter market type, mainly for fitting in old yank tanks that didnt have A/Cexpect to pay$500 +

franc123, Mar 9, 12:21pm
This.It would be the only economic way.If you know what you are doing and you or a mate know exactly what parts you require and are prepared to spend a couple of hours down there pulling a dash out to pull the evaporator and the underbonnet gear and plumbing, go for it.Its then just a case of getting a new drier and some O rings for the hoses and fitting it all in, and running it down to an auto sparky, aircon specialist or any garage thats got the gear to get it leak tested/vacuumed and charged.Bear in mind that as well as a compressor you may also need special bracketry to fit it to the engine, you may also need to swipe the alternator too if it requires a higher output one, and maybe even the crankshaft pulley as well. And a drivebelt and tensioner and the switchgear for the dash of course. It'd be possible to get it up and running for $5-700 I reckon if you DIY.

elect70, Mar 9, 4:19pm
^^^^thosemachinekits are $$$,done a few cab toptrash mashers&minetrucks.

carlz05, Mar 9, 4:39pm
Sorry man, waste of time. Look for another car.I did this to a 92 Skyline when air con blew up. I had to replace with a later model air con unit as the refrigerent had changed.you need to look at post 1994 cars for replacement parts, and it will be horrific.Look at $1000 to $1500 to install.

hanmer, Mar 9, 5:10pm
sponge, they are classics!love the one's with he guys hanging out the windows to sit on aircon.great laugh.
Mr hanmer wouldn't dare do those things . an airplane , yes but not an old mitsi.i'm just gonna have to leave all the windows open when driving;);)
thanks heaps, guys.

fordcrzy, Mar 9, 6:01pm
haha my 1986 honda civic had climate control air con and mitsi still hadnt made it standard for another ten years plus! god mitsis are crap.

petal_91, Mar 9, 6:14pm
It will be a NZ new one. Maybe even assembled in Porirua. NZ new cars were very basic right into the mid-1990s.

franc123, Mar 9, 6:26pm
Earlier R12 systems can be changed to R134a, it doesn't require replacement of major components, only seals and receiver drier if the system is otherwise serviceable. The OP has stated that the car is 15yo, which means that an equivalent model fitted with factory AC would already be using R134a.

morrisman1, Mar 9, 7:21pm
chances are your mitsi came out with air conditioning in a higher specced model. Find a wreck and grab all the bits out of that. Someone who knows them better may be able to assist with the electrical side of it more. I wouldn't be surprised if all the wiring for a/c was already in your car.

elect70, Mar 10, 11:14am
Also found the opposite, carswithout heaters fitted, made fortropical cliamateshadA/C . Bought in asused imports &not discovered until owner tried to use the heater .Mainly ontoyotacorrollas.

texastwo, Mar 10, 11:17am
Think some imports from Sth Africahad this issue.

mattnzw, Mar 10, 12:11pm
What did people do before AC. They opened a window. This is all you need to do and will cool the car down.
