Have been quoted $350 to supply and install a remote central locking control unit in my Rav4 (1996). All the locking hardware ,actuators etc are already there. I have no issue paying a tradesman for their knowledge but suspect $350 is a bit over the top. Would give it ago myself but having trouble finding detailed instructions on line. Looks like I can by the control unit and remotes off Trade Me for less than $50.00 or is that junk. Regards

Depends on what unit the tradsman is fitting! whats the brake down of the $350!

Unfortunately did not get a detailed description of unit, just an all up quote. Are there units that are better quality and worth the $$$.

Well there is no way of telling if you are being done over with the figger of $350 as we dont know their hourly rate or what make/model of unit you are having fitted. And yes there are different quality units out there. The more expensive ones are able to have new remotes signed on just incase you loose one. the cheep ones will be discontinuned within a year or so.

Thanks gadgit, I suspect that I have been quoted on a upmarket unit which I have no problem with. I have no problem paying top $$ for a top job.

The other thing worth looking into is what batteries the remotes take, some of them take an unusual size of 3V button cell which are hard to get hold of and stupidly expensive too.
