Oh for goodness sake you'd think common sense would apply, anyone who has worked in this industry knows ID information on most cars assembled here was minimal in those days, in fact well on into the 80's, it was common to not have chassis numbers stamped into the firewall, guard, bonnet slam panel or wherever and just have a tag. They'll be demanding a letter of verification from a representative from Todds next lol. Bureaucratic fools.

What are you doing with a name like you got but mucking around with quality gear like Vals!

Did the agent tell you that you must show where the Body/Chassis stamp is, or was it just a comment that they couldn't find it!

This is quite alarming for me because I'm rebuilding a car (actually a Val too) that was re-bodied in 1985. Any numbers on the body, if any will be different from the original ownership papers. Rego is now dead and it will need to be re regoed.

I've spoken to a VTNZ agent of the issue, and they have verbally told me it won't be a problem. (I've got evidence of the re body in photos, and it is a one owner car, so history is clear)
I've also rang LTSA (or whatever their name is now) and they have told me it is up to their agent to decide.

I'm not comfortable with the fact that once I rebuild the car after considerable time and expense, that someone could change their mind and say no to a Re Rego because the body numbers aren't there.
Anyone got some advice please!

yes NEVER tell any one its a rebody .it you hadnt of told them it would not of been a problem .what model val is it

pdc1, Mar 6, 7:35pm
No, I won't be telling them when the time comes. It's a VC and still at a very early stage, so I'm not too committed if I decide the risk is too great of not being able to get it on the road later.
The VTNZ agent I spoke to, who I told the whole story to, said it wouldn't be a problem for him later, but I just can't get this in writing. Just get alarmed when posts like this turn up insisting on numbers, when mine isn't going to have any, apart from the number plate. Unfortunately the engine number is different too from an earlier engine exchange.
I do have a parts car that has all numbers, so I could probably use these if I have to as a backup plan, but the other car is sentimental, having only one previous family owner.

on ap5the body tag is stamed on the right iner guard just above the shock, not sure if vc have it there ,hope this helps .

make sure you got all paper work history ownership papers and numbers match. This is my brother in laws car. Ive got a shed full of holdens.trader_84. The problem with the val we have all the paperwrk its a theft thing with vtnz if nothing matches they wont re vin car this car was restored and fitted with recond 318 and vip running gear (another prob have to cert aswell) and then sat in storage for 23years and a lot of laws changed the guy we are dealing with said there should be a stamp matching the riverted tag on the body somwhere find this to show em and can go ahead.

trader_84, Mar 7, 4:40am
Yeah, they are anal about numbers but there would be heaps (and heaps more) of Valiants running around on a number that it didn't leave the factory with. If you were into Vals the same you are into Holdens, then you'd know. The cretins at VTNZ (unless you are extremely unlucky) won't know squat about Valiant inner guard numbers in terms of what they look like or their placement . and which ones got them. They were bigger stampings than the typical engineer type stamps you can get - but who cares! Give them what they want - a number stamped anywhere onto the upper facing surface of the R/H inner guard anywhere between the shock nut and the headlight. Make it look like its been there since 67', say nothing and push your car through.

There is quite a few VF - VG Coupes running around with VE front guards on them. This is done to give them the 68' Dart look. The problem for newbies trying this mod though is - the VE front end is around 50mm shorter than its later brothers - ie. the chassis/inner guards are actually shorter. There are several ways of getting around this. One of them involves unpicking the existing sheetmetal then stitching on the VE after taking 50mm from off the nose. These cars are VIN'd. There'd be some 'compliance engineering' going on to make the new front fit what the body tags are saying. Mention the word 'rebody' or similar on here or at VTNZ and you get looked at like you stole it . its a common occurance in more places than just midnightautos Inc for a whole variety of reasons.
