Forklift issues

red97, Mar 6, 2:51pm
Hi motoring people,
i have a forklift mid eighties mitsubishi petrol/lpg.
Issue One - yesterday it was going fine then turned it off and went back and it would not go. no click when i pressed the starter so i shorted a couple of terminals on the solanoid and the starter motor gave a growl so i tried the starter button again and away she went. this morning it wouldnt start and the terminal trick didnt work so i turned the flywheel/ring gear (!) a wee bit and then it went again.so from these symtoms does it need a new starter motor or solanoid or both or is there something else going on!

Issue 2 - as mentioned it is lpg/petrol but due to our location we only run it on petrol.when it is running on petrol and quite warm it carries on spluttering when the ignition is turned off but it doesnt do this on lpg, would this be a tuning issue! i have tried the distributor in various positions to no avail as this was suggested to me. any ideas how i could stop this happening!
thanks

1) Sounds like starter motor brushes.
2) Yes, a tuning problem. The reason it won't do it on LPG is the fuel is shut off by a solenoid. Set the timing properly and try a lower idle speed.

needs a dual curve ignition system fittedas well as wot meathead said above. /gas lock offsolenoid valve could be leaky too

its a f/lift it does not need one. Op yes sounds like starter those starters are pretty cheap new so maybe a easy option for ya get a sparky in and as above sounds like needs a tune . just for reference starter is only engaged during start turning engine will have no affect on starter purely coincidental .only time it will is if the ring gear is screwed or drive is stuffed. These do not however fit yoiur symptoms

We service a diesel mid 80s mitsi forklift and have had to replace the ring gear a couple of times in the last 5 years for some reason.Cant figure out why but maybe you have the same issue by the sound of it !

cheers for the help i will order a new starter tomorrow and hopefully that will be the end of it

Is there a inhibitor switch on it somewhere thats playing up ! A Ford repower might be the go.

bigfatmat1, Mar 6, 5:01pm
yes there is a inhibitor switch but he bridged the starter and nothing so this pretty much condemns the starter

red97, Mar 6, 5:54pm
ive got a mitzy 2.8 diesel lined up to throw in it if all else fails

i think op would like reasonably reliable f/lift

I would prefer a extremely reliable forklift over a reasonably reliable forklift. The forklift in question is a horrible pussy green colour so in adding a Ford engine to it would be over capitalising . The starter motorwould be getting a lot of work with very short trips starting and stopping all the time.

issue one sounds like the starter motor needs replacing or checking rebuild.
issue 2 is caused by low octane crap fuel as it be tuned for lpg you need 98 octane fuel and a bottle injector cleaner as a startpoint .
what you discribe is called dieseling
