6A12 won't rev up

Hi all am stuck with this problem, the car is a 97 legnum non GDI, engine just splutters and dies when trying to race it, but will rev up when throttle is gradually depressed and when engine is up to speed it can be raced. No fault codes, TPS adjusted correctly and working correctly, crank and cam angle sensor checking normal, AFS and air temp sensor normal, timing is at 5 degrees BTDC, plugs are good, fuel pressure is at specification and O2 sensor is cross counting as it should be. any advice would be greatly appreciated

Whats your air cleaner like!

n3d4sp3d, Mar 4, 5:03pm
near new

Check the hoses from the air cleaner to the throttle body for any holes just fixed a car with the same problems it had a leak in the hose

will check that tomorrow thank you

also the transistor in dizzy is not switching when engine is raced from idle and timing is not advanced however when throttle is gradually depressed the transistor switches ad timing is advanced.

I had a similar issue with my 6A13 25ST-R which turned out to be the distributor cap missing the prong from the coil output feed to the rotor arm. It was pushed down and stuck into the rotor and wasn't generating a strong enough spark for higher rpms.

Thanks Phillip this had been suggested to me but did not think it was the issue as it has a strong spark and the engine is able to rev up under gradual throttle

ECU isn't responding to load, probably due to a dying air flow meter, classic symptoms of that.Unless live scan tool data or multimeter readings from backprobing its output say otherwise I'd be substituting another one, they don't necessarily throw fault codes when faulty. Those vortex flow meters were never outstandingly reliable.

Is the fuel pressure still ok when you stab the throttle! The GDI engines have a very small and very fine fuel filter where the fuel line meets the engine. Cars run and idle fine. But won't drive with any load.

yup fuel pressure mint when throttle opened that is what has me beat every thing is checking normal even when the vehicle is playing up

happylad3, Mar 4, 6:05pm
Where are you checking the pressure! On the fuel rail! Or on the fuel supply line!

n3d4sp3d, Mar 4, 6:33pm
at the rail, pressure increases with throttle opening even when engine stutters

how have you checked a/f and coil!

bigfatmat1, Mar 4, 7:17pm
I would check the coil at the primary with a scope making sure the voltage is not spiking when under wot this will show up any problems spark related i.e plugs leads rotor cap coilI would also use a scope on a/f this would give a fair idea of airleaks. Also have you checked fuel flow or just pressure!

Your exhaust isn't blocked or bent is it !

Good luck mate. have you spoken to Jarrod in Hamilton!

Strong spark when! At idle! Did you pull off the dizzy cap and actually check! Mine did exactly the same - if you gave it gradual throttle the revs would come up but if you stabbed the throttle it would bog and die and start popping through the intake. The exhaust smelled very rich of fuel and sometimes it would be hard to start due to partially flooding itself.
