What cost should one expect to replace a head gasket!Sabaru 96 250t 200 +Ks on the clock.

fiatracer, Feb 26, 9:15am
you'll never find the part

floscey, Feb 26, 9:23am
one or both !

daniel993, Feb 26, 9:27am
one but was told best to do both.

monsieurl, Feb 26, 10:02am
Sell the car as parts, it's not going to be justifiable to do the work.
You would be looking at 1500-2k

funkydunky, Feb 26, 10:06am
how bad - is it losing coolant!

daniel993, Feb 26, 10:12am
around 2l every few days.

daniel993, Feb 26, 10:13am
Just been quoted $400 parts $450 labor.

funkydunky, Feb 26, 10:13am
hmm - yeah it might be false economy to repair then

monsieurl, Feb 26, 10:39am
Was that for one bank or both! if both maybe get it done but personally i wouldn't spend more than $500 on a car worth 2-3k

daniel993, Feb 26, 10:46am
Its not my car but yes that's what i was thinking.

intrade, Feb 26, 2:38pm
that be one bank then poop 2 month later goes the other bank. timingbelt parts are over 600$ for them boxer engines they are so expensive because they are like 2 engines in 1 for timing belt parts sealrings and gaskets almost. 24 parts i fitted i recall on the last subaru timingbelt service.

Maybe contact Keith at otago auto wreckers here in Dunedin,he does loads of them and knows them inside out. From memory i think the "complete"job on a 250t was around $1350, including steel gaskets, water pump, timing belt seals etc. The 250t engine had wrong gasket from factory, they all blow sooner or later.

shakespeare6, Feb 26, 4:51pm
Last one I did last yearcost me $600 steel headset included all seals, $90 heads planed, $120 water pump $140 headbolts $300 radiator.
Did it all myself .

If your getting it done make sure you get steel headgaskets whole reason for failure on those is the open deck blockon them and the composite gasket corroding away between the fireing ring and water jacket on the bottem you will see it all rotten

To do the job the motor has to come out because they dont have enough clearance between the heads and the chassis. Do the cam belt and water pump at the same time as if its done 200,000 km its due and alot easier on the bench.

Just rebuilt the whole engine as it will probaby run a beb or rod bearing soon so at 200+k its best to rebuild any ej engine.
Don't put a composite head gasket on it as it will fail like the factory ones. subaru makes a mls headgasket for these ej25d phase1 engines thats 1.4 mm thick 4 layered steel gasket part number 11044AA610 that will seal properly and will not fail again. Don't stoop it with subaru headgasket stick with genuine only!
btw i have one of these gasket sets 4 sale:)

Not hard to see why so many half decent cars get scrapped these days!

dent, Feb 26, 6:29pm
Check the blocks the have a tendency to warp and need machining.

jas_nz, Feb 26, 6:29pm
Just buy new engine. It's cheaper

noswalg, Feb 26, 9:31pm
really! Where can you get a new EJ25 for less than the cost of replacing head gaskets!
