Class 4 Drivers Licence. A Class 4 drivers licence is needed to operate a heavy rigid truck with a weight of more than 18,000kgs (Unit standard 17576).
Some trucks are 6 wheels some are 8 wheels to carry this wieght

If I recall correctly, yes, a 6 or 8 wheeler, over 18t, without a trailer. For that, you then need your 5, and will find your weights are such that it doesn't fall under a 3

Working on drill rigs, some are road legal but overweight for their configuration. If over (I think) 33 tonnes we had to fit an air operated tag axle on the 6 wheelers to bring them up to 8 wheelers, and the extra axle would be raised for roundabouts and tight corners to prevent scrubbing. All the drivers had class 4's and this was accepted as the trucks were classed as rigids.
