Been driving using glasses since the new licence came in never questioned the AA eyesight test until I go eye test for prescription shades. I was told that did not need prescription glasses to drive, my eyesight was fine.So been driving with non prescription shades since mid December. This week went to AA to have my licence conditions changed so I wouldnt have any hassles with Mr Plod. AA told me I needed a new test or cert from eye specialist. Had inhouse test at AA and failed! So I went to a different specialist and had a new eye test, they agreed with the first person and gave me a certificate to take to the AA. All good now awaiting new licence no corrective lens conditions. Guess lesson here is AA eye tests are not that good, if they bounce you get a second opinion.

Didn't they change the test quite a few years back, because the fail rate was too high!.I seem to recall that 10 years ago, the AA eye test took a few minutes, and tested left and right eyes separately.I renewed my license a few months ago, and the eye test seemed to be over in about 20 secs. You've also got to make sure that the eyepiece lens on the AA machines is clean.

I always fail the AA test then always get the OK from optometrist. Irritating

Yes the problem was the lateral test. Often the eyes didnt get enough time to adjust to the lens pieces. Thought they had sorted it by now.

Go to GP, memorise the eye chart and get him to give you a test, pass, andthen go get licence with his certificate.

It's a screening test administered by a receptionist, not an examination administered by an Optometrist.
If you pass the screening test your eyesight is fine, but if you fail it you need an Optometrist to have a look, you might be ok, or you might need lenses, whatever the case a receptionist isn't the one to tell you :-)
