just noticed expired for 8 months, i never received anything in the mail, though it was a 10 year licence and i moved in that time.I know what to do, but i don't know what to expect. Will i get a fine when i go to renew it!Thanks

bigmacca, Mar 15, 1:17pm
nah no fine when you renew it but they will if they pull you over on the road.mine was over by 6mths,got pulled over twice but played dumb and got away with it.crossed my eyes and dribbled a bit.lol.

Had the same thing happen to me, whereupon I discovered that the various bits of the LTSA don't actually talk to each other. Registration renewals were finding me no trouble, but nothing about the license. Renewed it as soon I discovered it expired without any hassle. Expect to be fined $400 (IIRC) if you are caught using it expired on the road though.

Just renewed mine last week after it had expired 18 months ago. I neededto spend $51 on a medical to keep my HT and a bank statement as proof of my address . Just another way for Government to make money. Any1 remember the life time licence that didnt last a life time.

saxman99, Mar 15, 2:45pm
Yep, still got mine somewhere here. It's good until 2047.Says it right there on the front.

kokako14, Mar 15, 2:55pm
I remember the lifetime licenses. Had mine checked by a cop about 2 weeks before I had to change to the plastic one (April ws the last month that changed by annual rotation).
Copper told me my license was expired and I shoudl have replaced it last year.
I told hime it was a lifetime license and didn't expire until 2000 and something.
He was going to write me a ticket for being unlicensed, so told the d**khead he had better go check with his superiors on the RT before he wasted his time and mine by writing out a ticket for an offence that hadn't even been committed.
He did. He came back to the car, passed me my license and walked away, the d**khead didn't even say anything, just passed it back and walked back to his car.
Wouldnt be suprised if he was probably someone high up in the police force now, knew every thing.Yeah Right

A good guide for the current licence is that it needs renewing on your x5th birthday (25,35,45,55 etc).

I think that is so when you reach the "senior" licence stage you have just had 10 years.

a.woodrow, Mar 15, 5:17pm
Mine's due this year and I'm 29.!

austingtir, Mar 15, 5:24pm
Maths is probably not his strong point.

nightboss, Mar 15, 5:27pm
Maybe the licences are 10 years for all new issues after the "lifetime" ones were replaced. Did you first get your licence when you were 19!

I know all those that had their "lifetime" licences changed to plastic photo licences were done as per the above.

Anyone else remember that changeover.

nightboss, Mar 15, 5:30pm
Check your own licences and lets see what others here have.

I am not asking for your age, just X5 or other.

My next is in 2018 at X5.

lisah23, Mar 15, 5:45pm
thanks for the very amusing replies:)cross fingers i don't get caught before Monday.or may have to play dumb and dribble too!.

nightboss, Mar 15, 6:05pm
Don't forget to cross your eyes too.

joanie04, Mar 15, 6:31pm
Mine expires in January 2016 and I will be 55.Apparently they don't send out reminders as there is no guarantee that you will still be at the same address you were at 10 years before. That's what they told me when I realised mine had expired last time. The mere male refused to renew his when it came time to do because it was a life time licence. He got caught speeding and was let off the expired licence fee on the proviso he renewed it within a certain period.Because he had left it so long we has lucky he didn't have to completely resit everything including HT, forklift etc.

chevcamaro, Mar 15, 7:01pm
yeah just had to do mine, 18 months oops sorry forgot, lmfao.piece of cake, udo seem to be correct with thex5
enjoy all legal, wheres the fun in that.go hard or go home

lisah23, Mar 15, 7:16pm
i sure will.and my legs!

a.woodrow, Mar 15, 7:30pm
I first got my licence at 15, learners was made of paper (remember those) just before they brought in plastic. I did get my motorbiker licence a few years back so perhaps I only got 5 years from then

mrfxit, Mar 15, 7:43pm
Mine was paper & didn't have any mention of an expiry date on it, still got it here somewhere.
Full car & bike 1st test

smac, Mar 15, 7:44pm
Yes at the change from the paper licence to photo you were required to renew at your next X5th birthday. This was simply done to stagger the population across 12 months rather than have everyone rushing in at once (and that bump would reoccur every ten years).

cassina1, Mar 15, 8:56pm
Renewed mine 2 weeks ago and did get a reminder in the mail. I got a free eye check from Specsavers being an AA Member but got that out of the way first in case I had needed new glasses. Worst thing was the 3/4hr wait
at the AA licensing centre.

pollymay, Mar 16, 2:49am
Easy solution, add another class of licence so you get a nice new one in the mail. Seems to be what I do every now and then, it'll have to be twice the size to fit everything in by the time I'm done.

stevo2, Mar 16, 4:34am
Mine was due January this year at just turned X4

pebbles61, Mar 16, 7:20am
So you get given a lifetime licence and then say na, it's not lifetime anymore. Surely some grounds to go to the consumer affairs! same again with lifetime firearm licences. lol

meathead_timaru, Mar 16, 10:04am
Same here - which is strange as your driver's licence is supposed to be linked to your registrations.

smac, Mar 16, 10:54am
What makes you think they're linked in any way! Other than the fact you may have used your driver licence as ID when you did change of ownership, they are not linked. The two registers are set up by different legislation. Under the current regs the driver licence register can not be updated just because you change your address on a vehicle. You have to specifically advise the NZTA to update your driver licence address or it won't happen.
