Speed records, why two times to get the record?

gunhand, Mar 19, 7:30pm
Why do you have to go about getting a speed record by doing it twice in a certain time!
If you do it once you pretty much have done it I would thought.
Is there timing gear that unreliable or something!
You don't have to run the 100m at the olypmics twice in an hour to get a gold and world record.
And drag racers don't have to back a new time.do they!

2nd time round, car can be more warmer and more fuel to the engine.and to get an accurate reading.

Normally they do it in the reverse direction as well. To ensure wasn't wind and gradient influenced too.

Good points.

"The reason for running both ways on the racing course is to even out the advantage of driving with a tailwind."

For the Olympics any tail wind must be under 2m/s for the race to be eligible for records.

Exactly the answer to gunhand's question,

So the salt flats arn't flat then LOL, what about a windless day! Im sure that happens from time to time but yea that makes good sence still.

bigmuz1, Mar 19, 7:52pm
I think it has to be within a certain time of the first run too (maybe an hour)
With the speeds the top cars reach these days its a real challange to get the car stopped, get the support crew to catch up with it to get it turned around and ready for the second pass.

FIA recognised records, as far as I know, is an average of 1 run up and 1 down the course within 1 hour. You can make up your own rules to suit whatever you want to claim as a record.
you are not a member of the flat earth society! (reply to your salt flats.) they are actually dried salt lakes.

Yes they do have to 'back up' a new record within 1% of new mph/et and at the same meeting (must be a sanctioned event)as prior run. Car will be scrutinized straight after doing each record run to check all is legit and fair. Tail wind also 10mph or less.
Racers are human and have been known to cheat, hence the double check. Might be running better fuel(more aerated), more boost, less weight, etc; doing something to gain performance outside of the rules of their class.

Huh!

No, they follow the curvature of the earth.so that means they are.umm.uphill.or downhill.or both!
