Ive been looking at a few safaris but I want a manual with a winch. I use to have one with a factory winch and I assume its ran off the gearbox. Can I get an adapter to put on the side of the next safari gearbox so I can fit a winch, or would it be easier and cheaper to buy a cheap manual safari with a factory winch and swap the gearbox and winch over.

Yes,Its called a PTO (Power Take Off) that bolts to the side of your transfer box You shoiuld be able to find a new or second hand one at wreckers or 4x4 shops or On line. Then you just need a PTO driven winch to bolt up to it (and probably the right winch mountable front bar). As for cost, get your fingers to do the walking.

Or, just fit an electric winch.

The PTO is driven off the gearbox, not the transfer case. There are also support bearings for the PTO drive-shaft which look like they're welded to the chassis - I doubt these are fitted to Safaris that don't have factory winches. A full used OEM PTO setup is likely to cost serious $$$, they are sought after in Aus where Patrols/Mavericks seldom came with them fitted, and aussie buyers look for them in NZ. One was sold on TM, minus PTO take-off and drive shaft, a month or so ago.Price isn't shown any more. So, as NZTools suggests, an electric winch may be the way to go.Not cheap, but you're unlikely to be able to do an OEM PTO winch retrofit cheaply unless you get lucky, or buy a wrecked LWB hi-roof, swap out the winch, and part out the rest.

Those OEM pto winch's are very solid units & reliable but also very slow compared to an electric unit Good & bad to both units
Pto = slow but very solidwith ton's of torque/ NEED an operator in the cab / no remote controls/ heavy setup combo./need engine running/ no extra big batterys needed/ not easy to retrofit/ hard to get spare parts specific to that unit
Compared to .>>
Electric = fast but only modest torque / remote control /don't need an operator in the cab/ don't need engine running/ need a bigger battery to be sure of enough lasting power/ light weight setup combo/ easy to fit to any vehicle/ any other electric winch will fit/ easy & reasonably cheap to get parts
So in summery . >> Go for the pto unit if you need a tree stump pulling slow moving uphill monster Go electric if you need random usage for modest pulling power on the flat

There's another thing to watch out for with PTO retrofit.OEM exhaust runs very close to the PTO driveshaft. If it doesn't have an OEM exhaust, then chances are that there won't be room to retrofit the PTO.
