That's very good value, especially if it come with two batteriesIs it in their "red card" sale catalogue!I can't see their catalogue on-line - it won't load for some reason.

icemans1, Mar 22, 4:59pm
not sure about the sale, but yes it has 2 batteries

llortmt, Mar 22, 5:11pm
Just Ni-Cad ones.

mm12345, Mar 22, 5:58pm
Yep.I almost walked out the door with one, then oooppps.
Put it back on the shelf. Been there - done that.Never again.
There are apparently 2.! AH Makita 12v NiMH batteries available from Makita which would be better - and use the same charger, but nobody at my local Placemakers knew if they'd fit the drill, nor if they could get them, nor the price.
So - not such a great deal - I'd rather have a lesser "brand" with NiMH or lithium ion batteries, than possibly a better drill stuck with nasty old batteries.

My 12V Makita battery drill is going strong after coming up 8 years now. Yes I have li ion 18v Makita too but its surprising how much more torque the sucker has, maybe real or imagined. Its been left on the odd scaffold over the weekend with it raining too. Sometimes the simple gear just gets it done.Trade use - builder. Its done work ; /

i like nicad battery better. ni mh are designed to die after 2 years if you use them or not. my nicad just died and i got it secoundhand it was about 8 years oldits got 2 batterys in the box so should do me again for the next 5 years.

mm12345, Mar 23, 10:36am
They're not "designed to fail after 2 years".
They have a much higher self-discharge rate than Nicad or lithium ion.But there are low self-discharge rate NiMH batteries made, which have lower self discharge rates again than any of the other rechargeable battery types.I don't know if those cells find their way into power tools - probably not.
They are also used as backup power source for things like cellphone towers - specifically because they last a long time compared to other battery types, including NiCd. I've got some panasonic cordless phones here which must be at least 10 years old, with original NiMH AAA cells in them, and which seem to be as good as new.
Your experience is completely different from mine.I've got a coffin in my basement full of dead cordless tools with nicad batteries, impulse purchases from the past.
The makita drill in question seemed too good to be true.I don't know what the drill itself is like - it looked quite good, but well short of trade quality Li Ion drills I'm used to using - but they are in the $500+ price range.

i got that one wrong nimh are lasting its the lion lithium ion battery that go dead after 2 years not nimh that said we got a old hedge trimmer still working on its nicd battery 20 years later. The problem was or maybe still is that there is a patent on larger nimh battery its why laptops all run lions i think Gm and toyota hold the patent rights on larger capacity nimh if i recall right.

Aging is a concern with most lithium-ion batteries and many manufacturers remain silent about this issue. Some capacity deterioration is noticeable after one year, whether the battery is in use or not. The battery frequently fails after two or three years. It should be noted that other chemistries also have age-related degenerative effects. This is especially true for nickel-metal-hydride if exposed to high ambient temperatures. At the same time, lithium-ion packs are known to have served for five years in some applications.

Makita had so much trouble with the early li ion batteries that they are still replacing under warrenty well outside the warrenty period.

The have changed manufacturer for their batteries now.

icemans1, Mar 24, 2:31pm
sounds like old school nicad are better than modern li ion batteries LOL

A birthday present comprising a so called top of the range cordless drill has only lasted to the next birthday. Both Ni Ion battery packs have failed after 18 months home use and quoted $140 each to replace. 3 years warrenty on the drill but only 1 year on the battery packs.Might as well bin the drill and what do I tell the givers!

Same here. Xmas present of a bosch blue jigsaw. Burnt motor out after the first usage.

get aftermarket batterys there is some sellers who sell some just buy one so you can use it again.

Found the receipt and the drill is just over 2 years old.Have sent the packs off for a rebuild with better quality cells as I like the drill.

outbidyou2, Mar 26, 8:50pm
Which brand!
